BetterHelp Provides Long-Term Solution for Lingering Effects of Holiday Stress

World’s Leading Online Counseling Platform Sees Nearly 40 Percent Increase in the Number of Therapy Sessions around Christmas and New Year’s Day

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--()--From depression and anxiety to relationship conflicts and other personal challenges, online therapy may be an ideal option for those struggling with daily mental health challenges. BetterHelp, the largest online counseling platform, offers an effective and affordable solution for a number of issues, including sadness and stress that arise during the holidays.

“71 percent of our members feel more anxious and stressed around the holidays”

"While the holidays can be a joyous time for many people to come together and celebrate, they can also be a source of distress for others," says Haesue Jo, a licensed marriage and family therapist who provides services through BetterHelp. "The holidays can remind us of people we have lost, the families we don’t have, and generally be a trigger for those individuals that don’t have happy memories associated with them. The holidays can also be a source of obligation. Sometimes we choose not to interact with our families intentionally, and the holidays can feel like a time that we have to, although we’re not always sure why."

In a survey of nearly 600 users who are getting counseling through BetterHelp, the top five reasons for stress and anxiety during the holidays include: the financial strains of holiday expenses (58 percent), visiting or seeing family and friends (54 percent), feelings of loneliness (46 percent), feelings of sadness (44 percent) and finding time to take care of oneself (30 percent).

“Every year we see a big spike in the number of people who reach out for help around the holidays,” said Alon Matas, president and founder of BetterHelp. “Online therapy can be a great solution for those who are facing life challenges and may be overwhelmed by trouble handling the stress of the holidays.”

In a study conducted at the Berkeley Well-Being Institute by Professor Tchiki Davis, M.A., Ph.D, from University of California Berkeley, data suggests that online counseling can be as effective as face-to-face counseling. BetterHelp offers access to licensed, trained, experienced, and accredited psychologists (PhD / PsyD), marriage and family therapists (LMFT), clinical social workers (LCSW/LMSW), and board licensed professional counselors (LPC) via the website and the app.

“71 percent of our members feel more anxious and stressed around the holidays,” said Matas. “Our therapists are here to help and support them.”
