Manhattan-Based SAFE Disposal Event Run by DSNY and ERI Draws VIPs

NEW YORK--()--ERI, the nation’s leading recycler of electronic waste and the world's largest IT asset disposition (ITAD) and cybersecurity-focused hardware destruction company, and the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) had another successful NYC SAFE Disposal Event in Manhattan last month. The September 24th event, part of a series of collection events developed by DSNY in partnership with ERI and Veolia Environmental Services, drew locals, including Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, who paid a visit, and DSNY Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, who dropped off some e-waste of her own.

“The need to get rid of unwanted or outdated consumer electronics is a constant”

The SAFE Disposal events help NYC residents dispose of harmful household products safely and responsibly. DSNY, ERI, and Veolia host SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables and Electronics) Disposal Events ten times each year, in every borough of New York City. The successful Manhattan event will be followed by similar events at Orchard Beach in the Bronx on October 7th and at Midland Beach in Staten Island on October 21st. Upcoming events are posted online at:

As part of the SAFE events, ERI manages the collection, handling, and reuse or recycling of electronic waste. ERI responsibly recycles all of the e-waste collected at these events, guaranteeing data security and privacy destruction. Veolia collects, handles, and recycles or disposes of household hazardous waste; and DSNY's Environmental Police Unit takes control of the pharmaceuticals.

ERI has a long-term contract with the City of New York, with the cost of services covered by electronics manufacturers under the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act.

“The need to get rid of unwanted or outdated consumer electronics is a constant,” said John Shegerian, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of ERI. “We are honored to participate in these important collaborations with the great City of New York and our friends at Veolia. That we continue to regularly provide events for the responsible recycling of electronics and other hazardous waste items for New Yorkers, as a supplement to our groundbreaking ecycleNYC pick-up program, is a huge accomplishment. As someone who was born and raised in New York City, it’s genuinely rewarding to be able to help so many in our city do the right thing and collect and recycle their e-waste and keep toxic electronics out of landfills.”

ERI will recycle all the e-waste that was collected at the event, destroying all data (even when a device is not fully destroyed) and recycling or refurbishing all items in an environmentally responsible manner.

ERI, the nation’s leading recycler of electronic waste and the world's largest ITAD and cybersecurity-focused hardware destruction company, is certified to de-manufacture and recycle every type of electronic waste in an environmentally responsible manner. ERI processes more than 275 million pounds of electronic waste annually at eight locations, serving every zip code in the United States. For more information about e-waste recycling and ERI, call 1-800-ERI-DIRECT or visit
