National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association Statement on Hurricane Harvey

ALEXANDRIA, Va.--()--Jeanette Dwyer, president of the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association (NRLCA), today issued the following statement on behalf of the union's over 115,000 members:

“Rural carriers are all too familiar with the dangers of severe weather, but rarely do we face a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions, like the floodwaters we now see in Texas and Louisiana communities.”

“The National Board sends its thoughts and prayers to those in and around Houston, Corpus Christi, and Louisiana who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“Rural carriers are all too familiar with the dangers of severe weather, but rarely do we face a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions, like the floodwaters we now see in Texas and Louisiana communities.

“At times like these, we see how our communities come together to help each other out, and the Postal Service plays a significant role in that effort before, during, and in the aftermath of these events. Such has been the case these past few days. NRLCA district representatives and stewards--with families of their own impacted by the storm--have worked heroically with Postal Service district managers and other officials to ensure that affected rural carriers will resume delivery in the suspended areas when it is safe to do so. The mail they carry may include life-saving medications, donations, and supplies to citizens and relief organizations. We commend the many rural carriers in and around the impact areas who continue to provide service to the American public not in the suspended areas.

“We commend all of our union representatives, carriers, and Postal Service managers who have stepped up to the task. And we urge you to continue this work safely as the floods eventually subside and the recovery and rebuilding begins.

“To all of those affected by this natural disaster, you are in our thoughts and prayers.”
