Colorado Awarded Outdoor Retailer Show

Shows will drive millions of dollars into the state’s economy and further Colorado’s position as the leading voice in the outdoor recreation industry

DENVER--()--Colorado’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Office, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock announced today that Colorado has been selected as the new home for the Outdoor Retailer shows, which include three major outdoor recreation trade shows: the Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show, the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market and Outdoor Retailer November.

“This was a difficult and challenging task to place three 20,000 plus person shows in our busy convention seasons. However, we know that this is important to the State and City for economic development opportunities beyond the economic impact of these three annual tradeshows.”

“This is a proud day for Colorado. The outdoor recreation community not only serves as a significant economic driver for our state and our nation, but it also plays an important role in contributing to the national dialogue regarding important issues around climate change, access to public lands, and the promotion of health and wellness,” said Luis Benitez, director of Colorado’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Office. “We are honored to have the responsibility of helping lead this dialogue at a national level and creating a legacy for our state to be proud of.”

The first show in Colorado will be the newly merged Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show, endorsed and sponsored by SnowSports Industries America (SIA) and Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), in January 2018. It will be the largest outdoor and winter sports industry gathering in North America. Outdoor Retailer Summer Market will stage in Denver in July 2018, as will the newly announced November show. Denver has played host to the SIA Show since 2011.

“Outdoor Retailer chose Denver for its new home because it was the undeniable choice of the industry,” said Marisa Nicholson, vice president Outdoor Group at Emerald Expositions and Outdoor Retailer show director. “Denver and the state of Colorado are passionate about protecting and nurturing outdoor recreation, critical to the growth of our industry. The Mayor, the Governor, Colorado’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Office and Visit Denver not only accommodated all our needs to run a successful show, but also welcomed us with open arms. After 35 years, this is a reset. Imagine one united community and all that energy culminating in one place – Denver. The right place, right time, right stuff.”

“We are thrilled that Outdoor Retailer has selected Denver as the new home of its summer and winter trade shows and thankful to our visitors’ bureaus and so many other critical partners for making this happen. We are excited to showcase Denver’s healthy lifestyle during this phenomenal event,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. “For the first time, Denver surpassed 30 million annual visitors and for the 11th consecutive year we have generated record tourism numbers. Those visitors come to enjoy all that Denver has to offer, as well as to use our great city as a base camp for amazing outdoor adventures. We’re proud to foster this adventurous Colorado spirit and to help fuel our outdoor recreation industry,” added Mayor Hancock.

The shows bring together thousands of leaders in the outdoor recreation industry, representing some of the most iconic and emerging brands, as well as the latest innovations and ideas, while also providing an opportunity for the industry to gather, discuss important policy initiatives and share innovations.

Governor John Hickenlooper highlighted today the importance of having the Outdoor Retailer shows come to Colorado. “Outdoor recreation is core to our western way of life. The industry plays a critical role in Colorado’s economy. It harmonizes the breathtaking vistas and the gritty, exciting entrepreneurial spirit Colorado is known for. Hosting the shows will build on this success and celebrate the reasons why we love to call Colorado home. Colorado is in a unique position to continue providing leadership and driving the national conversation in support of the industry and its economic contribution.”

A recent report by OIA highlights that outdoor recreation is a huge economic force in the state of Colorado, generating $28 billion in consumer spending annually. Also, the report showed that more than 71 percent of Colorado’s 5.7 million residents participate in outdoor recreation each year, reinforcing that communities across Colorado recognize that outdoor recreation supports a healthy lifestyle, contributes to a high quality of life and – perhaps most importantly – attracts and sustains employers and families.
