527 Madison Avenue Announces Angela Fraleigh Exhibition

NEW YORK--()--527 Madison Avenue is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Angela Fraleigh in the Lobby Gallery from May 10 to September 5, 2017. Located at 54th Street and Madison Avenue, the exhibition is open to the public from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday. This will be the tenth exhibition in 527 Madison’s ongoing program showcasing noteworthy emerging and mid-career artists. The exhibition will consist of five oil paintings, including a large diptych that Fraleigh created specifically for the 527 Madison space.

Fraleigh’s paintings combine convincing figuration with lyrical abstraction to create images that are simultaneously beautiful and thought-provoking. Fraleigh places draped figures in luscious landscapes, which often dissolve into thin washes of vivid colors. The artist references classical old master paintings through their gestures and expressions. Also evocative of classicism is the sense of timelessness within these works, as the subjects appear to be unaffected by their animated surroundings.

Fraleigh’s assured manner and ability to render convincing figures demonstrates her technical skills. The drawing in her works is highly proficient as is the fluid paint application. While there is an overt sense of beauty and ornament, the artist also undertakes a subtle inquiry into the manner in which the female form has typically been depicted throughout art history. Upon close consideration, Fraleigh’s arresting images take on additional meaning as the viewer considers how different these works are from traditional paintings.

A survey of Fraleigh’s work was recently held at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York, and she has also had exhibitions at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York. Currently, Fraleigh has a show of her work at Peters Projects in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She also has upcoming solo exhibitions scheduled at the Edward Hopper House in Nyack, New York, and at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, Delaware. Fraleigh holds a BFA from Boston University and an MFA from Yale University.
