Local Chicago Business, AKHAN Semiconductor, and Government Representatives Meet with Korean Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) to Discuss Technology and Trade

AKHAN Semiconductor alongside Congressmen Hultgren, Dold, and Gurnee Mayor Kovarik host one hour meeting on the possibility of opening up trade and investment with Korea

CHICAGO--()--AKHAN Semiconductor, U.S. Congressmen Randy Hultgren (IL-14) and Robert Dold (IL-10), Economic Development Director Ellen Dean, Chief Of Staff to Senator Melinda Bush Nick Meyer, and Gurnee Mayor Kristina Kovarik are pleased to announce a successful meeting with the Korean Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and Director General Soo Deuk Sohn, having taken place on April 5th, 2016.

“Seeing first-hand the economic ‘Miracle on the Han River’ during my trip there last October, I will continue to make it a priority to work with Illinois manufacturers like AKHAN Semiconductor to develop and grow American exports to our friends in Korea”

This introductory meeting discussed promoting and enabling possible trade/investment between Korea, the U.S. and more specifically Gurnee, IL and AKHAN, in partnership with the Village of Gurnee and U.S. Congressmen Randy Hultgren, and Robert Dold, Gurnee Mayor Kristina Kovarik, Economic Development Director Ellen Dean and Senator Melinda Bush’s Chief Of Staff Nick Meyer, to facilitate the dialogue. The meeting focused on how domestic science and IP can be transitioned to all scales and grown for global market needs as it applies to US-Korean trade. AKHAN and Gurnee hope to act as a catalyst to improve trade relations between the United States and South Korea, particularly in the STEM field.

“We are thrilled to be engaging with this group of distinguished representatives. The development and manufacture of AKHAN’s diamond technology creates new avenues for partnership in global commercialization and proliferation of the technology,” said Adam Khan, founder of AKHAN Semiconductor. “With the start of the ‘Diamond Prairie’ in Gurnee, IL well underway, the domestic R&D investments can now begin to pay global dividends through the market introduction of these much needed high performance, energy efficient, and clean technology materials.”

“We are excited to be engaging in this multi-lateral partnership with the Representatives, State of Illinois, City of Gurnee and of course, Akhan Semiconductor,” said KOTRA Director General Soo Deuk Sohn. “We see a lot of potential for Akhan’s technology in Korea in many different industry segments. We feel that this partnership will act as a catalyst in expanding cooperation in the growing STEM field, leading to globalization of applied technology. KOTRA has been at the forefront in facilitating partnerships between Korea and the companies and organizations around the world. We will continue to support this type of partnership in every way we can to further develop and fortify trade-investment ties between our two countries and our businesses.”

“The Diamond Prairie is fertile with a high technology electronics workforce created by companies like Motorola and has access to high caliber education institutions, such as Northwestern University, University of Chicago and College of Lake County,” said Carl Shurboff, COO of AKHAN Semiconductor. “It is a natural place to manufacture AKHAN’s cutting edge diamond technology, in part created at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, create jobs, increase the high technology presence in the northwest Chicago suburb of Gurnee, and enhance the impact of the College of Lake County.”

“When we brought AKHAN to Gurnee, with the help of our local partners and legislators, we knew they would be operating on the world stage. It didn’t take long! AKHAN’s groundbreaking technology is the wave of the future in consumer electronics, and South Korea is a key market,” said Gurnee Mayor Kristina Kovarik.

“Seeing first-hand the economic ‘Miracle on the Han River’ during my trip there last October, I will continue to make it a priority to work with Illinois manufacturers like AKHAN Semiconductor to develop and grow American exports to our friends in Korea,” said Congressman Robert Dold (IL-10).

“The Korean Trade-Investment Promotion Agency’s visit to Akhan Semiconductor and the Village of Gurnee sends a strong message to the world – Lake County is home to cutting-edge technology that can lead our economy through the 21st Century,” said Illinois State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake). “I am proud to support AKHAN’s efforts, and will continue to do all I can to recruit innovative businesses to our district.”

“Our valued trade relationship between the United States and South Korea is strong. All in all, nearly 500 jobs in my district are directly tied to locally built goods being sold in South Korea,” said Congressman Randy Hultgren (IL-14). “Not only are we a global transportation hub and financial center, Illinois is a nationwide leader in technology and research. We are proud to be the home of many outstanding universities and our strong network of National Labs. AKHAN spun their technology out of a tech-transfer agreement with Argonne National Lab. Their work is a shining example of the power and promise of public-private partnerships—taking the impressive discoveries that are being made at Argonne and other National Labs and bringing them to the marketplace. Taxpayers are rewarded for their investments in science as our economy is propelled forward and local jobs are created along the way. AKHAN’s work is a prime example of the great resources that the United States—Illinois in particular—brings to the table for businesses to create new products and thrive.”

AKHAN Semiconductor is a technology company specializing in the fabrication and application of electronics-grade diamonds as functional semiconductors.
