Rice Stable Supply Support Organization Held Event to Introduce Appeal of Japanese Special Cuisine Culture EKIBEN and Rice to Foreign Press

TOKYO--()--Rice Stable Supply Support Organization (Public Interest Incorporated Association) held an event on 14th of January to introduce the appeal of Japanese special cuisine culture EKIBEN to the foreign press in Japan.

“I found Japonica rice great, which keeps its deliciousness even after it gets cold.”

The number of foreign tourists to Japan has been rapidly increasing with a view to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and is expected to exceed 20 million.

With the expanding foreign tourists’ demands to various local regions of Japan this event introduced EKIBEN in order to generate the awareness and recognition of the greatness of both “WASHOKU; Traditional Dietary Culture of the Japanese” and the underlying root of the culture “Japanese Rice”. EKIBEN is a boxed meal bought at railway stations that visitors can conveniently enjoy local delicacies while traveling from place to place. EKIBEN vary in a wide range from 2,000 to 3,000 different types and styles with locally-produced rice with side-dishes cooked with peoples’ ideas to keep its taste even after it gets cold. A total of 57 people of the press attended the event from 10 countries, including France, Germany, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, and also Japan enjoyed each-favorite-choice of EKIBEN out of 100 kinds fresh from many regions of Japan nationwide.

In the first part of the event, Ayao Okumura, Researcher of Traditional Dish from Osaka City University Graduate School, made a lecture on the appeal of “Onigiri” and EKIBEN from the standpoint of Japanese traditional dietary culture. In the second part, Katsuhiko Shiroki, Director of Product Development, NRE Daimasu Co., Ltd., made a speech on the company’s EKIBEN sales project in two overseas locations of Singapore and Taiwan. In the third part, foreign press attendees enjoyed making “Onigiri” Bento, which is called the first and the original EKIBEN, to find the deliciousness of rice and the Japanese people’s special affection to EKIBEN by Okumura’s instruction.

The foreign press attendees expressed their impressions at the interviews as “The EKIBEN packages are excellent.”, “I found Japonica rice great, which keeps its deliciousness even after it gets cold.”
