Keller Rohrback L.L.P. Investigates Allegations of Explosions Caused by Hoverboards

SEATTLE--()--Attorney Advertising -- Keller Rohrback L.L.P. is currently investigating allegations that hoverboards, the popular self-balancing, motorized, two-wheeled riding boards, have been exploding while in use or charging.

“The sheer number of incidents occurring around the country, and abroad, is what prompted our organization to address this serious issue on a national level.”

The National Fire Marshals organization issued an advisory warning that these explosions are “not a unique occurrence,” the President of the group’s Board of Directors said in a statement. “The sheer number of incidents occurring around the country, and abroad, is what prompted our organization to address this serious issue on a national level.” Recently, a Louisiana home was badly damaged after a scooter exploded while charging, and a Washington state mall had to be evacuated after a hoverboard blew up while in use. Additionally, hoverboards have been banned by several airlines. This move was supported by the Federal Aviation Association.

These explosions have happened internationally as well. The UK’s National Trading Standards seized more than 15,000 hoverboards since October 15, 2015 after finding them a major safety risk. Of the 17,000 hoverboards inspected, the organization said a disturbing 88% of these devices had an increased risk of overheating, exploding, or catching fire due to faulty plugs.

Hoverboards are expected to be one of the most popular holiday gifts of 2015. This high demand is usually exploited by irresponsible manufacturers who attempt to flood the market with cheap and dangerous products. If you or someone you know has purchased a hoverboard that may be affected and would like to learn more, contact attorneys Cari Laufenberg and Gretchen Cappio at (800) 776-6044 or via email at consumer@kellerrohrback.com.

UK Trading Standards has provided the following tips to consumers who are thinking of buying a hoverboard or who may already have done so:

  • Never leave the device charging unattended, especially overnight. A faulty cut-off switch means it could overheat.
  • Check the plug. Many faulty devices have a “clover-shaped” plug.
  • If buying online, be careful to check the website is genuine and has a contactable phone number and address.
  • Don’t be dazzled by prices which seem too low.
