“Chanel is a pioneer and her work speaks for itself. Ancient Song is an incredible place that has been a beacon of the community since she founded it,” said Morad Fareed, Founder and CEO, Square Roots. “Her very real impact on the lives and health of mothers and infants is critical to our integrated approach, and what she does is nothing short of amazing. We are honored to welcome her.”

Chanel L. Porchia-Albert is the Founder and Executive Director of Ancient Song Doula Services. Ancient Song was founded in the Fall of 2008 after Porchia-Albert experienced the birth of her first child at home. She is an activist, speaker, certified labor & postpartum doula, certified lactation counselor, midwifery assistant and student, vegan chef, and certified holistic health counselor specializing in high risk mothers, multiples, survivors of sexual trauma, VBAC's and DV, as well as a mother of four beautiful children. She is also the co-trainer for ASDS trainings. She has spoken at numerous colleges, conferences and continually rallied for women's issues.

“History amply shows that the freedom enjoyed by the many becomes fragile when the denial, even to the few, of basic human rights is tolerated. We hope that our work in the field of Infant and Maternal Health will be able to reach everyone in need of proper care and assistance.” said Ms. Porchia-Albert. “I’m grateful to work with Square Roots, an organization pioneering the way to better understanding infant and maternal mortality in the United States.”

Porchia-Albert is featured in Christy Turlington Burns three-part, film series, "Giving Birth in America" presented by CNN and Turlington’s Every Mother Counts. “Giving Birth in America” presents the surprising journey of four women as they give birth in America. The films seek to raise the profile and issues of maternal health in the United States. The films can be seen on cnn.com/mothers.

Square Roots was founded to address the current poor state of maternal health as the United States currently ranks only 33rd out of 176 countries as the best place to be a mother, and 56th in the world out of 224 countries in infant mortality.1 Additionally, in the U.S. women face a 1 in 1,800 risk of maternal death, the worst performance of any developed country in the world and the only developed nation with a rising maternal mortality rate.2
