Dr. William Gallivan & Blue Belt Technologies Announce First CT-Free Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement Surgery on the Central Coast

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--()--Dr. William Gallivan, lead surgeon at Orthopedic Institute of Santa Barbara, and Blue Belt Technologies announce the addition of the Navio® robotic-assisted surgical system for partial knee replacement. Navio utilizes CT-free navigation and a handheld, robotic tool. Dr. Gallivan is the first surgeon between San Diego and San Francisco to offer this next-generation robotic-assisted technology to patients who suffer from knee pain caused by early to mid-stage osteoarthritis. Since adopting this technology, Dr. Gallivan has successfully performed over two dozen procedures to date.

“The assistance of robotics enables me to very precisely resurface my patients’ knees, which may lead to improved outcomes.”

“Using the Navio® system allows me to visualize my patient’s bone structure virtually before I even begin to remove bone,” said Dr. Gallivan. “The assistance of robotics enables me to very precisely resurface my patients’ knees, which may lead to improved outcomes.”

With the Navio® system, pre-operative imaging is not needed, allowing the patient to receive the benefits of robotic guidance without the hassle, cost and radiation exposure of CT scans that competing technologies require. Instead, the surgeon is able to create a 3D ‘map’ of the patient’s knee intra-operatively, and uses kinematic reconstruction and anatomic landmarks to align the implant and balance the knee’s ligaments.

“Potential benefits to the patient are numerous,” said Dr. Gallivan. “Compared to total knee replacements, partial knee replacements are generally associated with smaller incisions, less scaring, shorter hospital stays or an outpatient procedure, and quicker recovery. Navio’s capabilities make this surgical procedure more available to patients.”
