iVantage Celebrates Fifth Anniversary of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs)

235 Named Top Performers over the Past Five Years; 16 Earned the Recognition Every Year

PORTLAND, Maine--()--iVantage Health Analytics announced today the 5th anniversary of the Hospital Strength INDEX™ and its companion study, “Rural Relevance, Vulnerability to Value." Over the past five years, the 100 Top CAHs have been recognized, with a total of 235 CAHs leading the way to a successful future for rural health. Sixteen hospitals stand out as consistent rural health leaders, having been recognized as a Top 100 CAH every year since the study was started. Those facilities are:

  • AVERA HOLY FAMILY HEALTH, IA
  • HEGG MEMORIAL HEALTH CENTER, IA
  • SIOUX CENTER COMMUNITY HOSPITAL & HEALTH , IA
  • DECATUR COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, IN
  • REDINGTON FAIRVIEW GENERAL HOSPITAL, ME
  • WALDO COUNTY GENERAL HOSPITAL, ME
  • NEW ULM MEDICAL CENTER, MN
  • COMMUNITY HOSPITAL OF ANACONDA, MT
  • BRODSTONE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, NE
  • SPEARE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, NH
  • KITTITAS VALLEY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL, WA
  • DOOR COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, WI
  • HUDSON HOSPITAL, WI
  • RED CEDAR MEDICAL CENTER-MAYO HEALTH SYSTEM, WI
  • RICHLAND HOSPITAL, WI
  • STAR VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER, WY

These top hospitals performed better than their peers in managing population risk, having high quality, better outcomes and patient satisfaction, lower costs and charges than their peers. The level of performance demonstrated by these facilities comes during a period of uncertainly within rural healthcare, and can serve as a blueprint for other rural providers working actively to navigate the transition to value-based healthcare models.

At the other end of the spectrum, 50 rural hospitals have closed this decade and iVantage has identified 283 additional rural hospitals at risk of closure based on more than 60 performance characteristics. If these vulnerable hospitals were to close, the impact would be significant: 700,000 Medicare patients alone would have to seek care farther from home, 86,000 jobs could be lost in rural communities and it would result in an estimated $10.6 billion loss to the GDP.

iVantage's landmark Rural Relevance Study: Vulnerability to Value offers the most authoritative assessment yet of rural and Critical Access Hospital value. To conduct the study, iVantage researchers evaluated more than 1,300 Critical Access Hospitals using public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
