Keller Rohrback L.L.P. Investigates Potentially Falsely Labeled and Dangerous Herbal Supplements

SEATTLE--()--Attorney Advertising. Keller Rohrback L.L.P. is currently investigating recent reports that four major retailers sold potentially falsely labeled and dangerous herbal supplements. GNC, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart (the “Companies”) received cease-and-desist letters demanding that the Companies explain how they verify the ingredients in their herbal supplements.

“No one should have to risk their health because of a company’s bait and switch in the health and wellness aisle.”

Tests, ordered by the New York Attorney General's office, concluded that the following supplements did not usually contain the ingredients advertised:

GNC (NYSE:GNC): Herbal Plus brand
Gingko Biloba, St. John's Wort, Ginseng, Echinacea, Saw Palmetto

Target (NYSE:TGT): Up & Up brand
Gingko Biloba, St. John's Wort, Echinacea, Saw Palmetto, Valerian Root

Walgreens (NasdaqGS:WBA): Finest Nutrition brand
Gingko Biloba, St. John's Wort, Ginseng, Garlic, Echinacea

Walmart (NYSE:WMT): Spring Valley brand
Gingko Biloba, St. John's Wort, Ginseng, Garlic, Echinacea, Saw Palmetto

Test results reflect that, overall, 79% of these supplements either did not contain the key ingredient or contained other undisclosed materials. The test results showed specifically that only 41% of the supplements at Target, 22% at GNC, and 18% at Walgreens had the ingredient advertised. At Wal-Mart, only 4% of the supplements contained the advertised ingredient.

“Consumers rely on companies making supplements to tell them the truth about what they’re buying and ingesting,” said partner Gretchen Cappio, a member of Keller Rohrback’s nationally recognized complex litigation group, “No one should have to risk their health because of a company’s bait and switch in the health and wellness aisle.”
