NEW ORLEANS--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Last to march in; last to march out. That’s how The Original Pinettes, an all-female brass band, made history Saturday under the Claiborne Bridge in the Tremé at the Red Bull Street Kings brass band blowout. The Original Pinettes beat out three of New Orleans’ other great brass bands in front of more than 7,000 spectators and a judging panel comprised of music greats including Walter "Whoadie" Ramsey, 2010 Red Bull Street Kings winning band leader, Kermit Ruffins and Trombone Shorty.
“Great bands, great energy, everybody played extremely well; it was really exciting to see the crowds reacting to their favorite bands. New street queens were crowned today.”
New Orleans turned out to watch, dance and second line with TBC, New Creations, The Original Pinettes and New Breed brass bands as they battled for brass supremacy. This year marked the second occasion of Red Bull Street Kings and the necessity to change the winners’ title from Street Kings to “Street Queens.”
“We're overwhelmed that we won,” said members of The Original Pinettes. “We're so excited and grateful to have been a part of this event. And we're so grateful to be crowned STREET QUEENS. Y’all, we changed the name! It took hard work, practice and dedication to win this.”
The Original Pinettes Brass Band is an all-female, New Orleans-based group of musicians originally formed in 1991 by students at St. Mary’s Catholic School. Many of the original members remain.
The four bands were judged on their musical selection, performance, showmanship and overall presentation. The judging panel was comprised of New Orleans icons Trombone Shorty, Kermit Ruffins, LeBron Joseph, Walter Ramsey and Jan Ramsey. Each band played two opening rounds, which included both traditional and original pieces. Two bands – The Original Pinettes and New Breed Brass Band – advanced to the finals for a head-to-head competition that determined the winners.
“It was just New Orleans unfolding, you know,” said Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. “Great bands, great energy, everybody played extremely well; it was really exciting to see the crowds reacting to their favorite bands. New street queens were crowned today.”
Since Red Bull Street Kings debuted in 2010, the project has become a highly sought after venue for New Orleans brass bands to showcase their talent. The winners of this year’s Red Bull Street Kings receive a three-day trip to the Red Bull Studios New York for a professional recording session with mentor Trombone Shorty.
The event was hosted by Glen David Andrews and DJ Slab1. Mannie Fresh got the crowd pumped with a DJ set before the bands marched in. New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis and Solange Knowles attended to show their support for the bands, making Red Bull Street Kings the place to be in New Orleans on Saturday.
“We really don't have any limitations in New Orleans so the best band won,” said Mannie Fresh after The Original Pinettes claimed their trophy. “It's cool that the female band went out there and represented; they deserved the win.”
The Red Bull Street Kings project enables rising brass bands to perform and compete in front of thousands of spectators to showcase the heritage of the brass band culture and prove who has the best sound and style. The event premiered in New Orleans in 2010 with The Stooges Brass Band claiming victory over The Free Agents, TBC and Soul Rebels.
Twelve bands applied for this year’s Red Bull Street Kings competition, and a jury of brass band music and culture experts from New Orleans selected the four finalists.
