“Flicker in LED Luminaires” is the first educational video to focus on the subject of flicker. In it, Terry Clark, Founder, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Finelite, discusses:
- What is flicker?
- Why has it reemerged as a concern in dimmable LED luminaires?
- How are objectionable levels of flicker and the type of LED power supply used related?
- How can lighting designers and engineers test for and minimize flicker?
“Engineers eliminated objectionable flicker in fluorescent luminaires some time ago,” said Clark. “Now, with the rapid rise in popularity of LED lighting systems, the issue has reemerged. And, as the Department of Energy and some regulatory agencies work to set standards for acceptable levels of flicker, it is important that lighting professionals and consumers understand what it is and who is at risk,” he continued.
“Flicker in LED Luminaires” is Finelite’s second installment in the LED Talks video series, an ongoing series of educational videos in which Terry Clark, a nationally recognized expert in the design and manufacture of high-performance, environmentally sustainable lighting systems, addresses important LED-related topics such as LED lifetime and Flicker. A white paper, Flicker in LED Luminaires, has been published to supplement this newest video.
The IES Progress Committee is mandated to "keep in touch with developments in the art and science of lighting throughout the world, and prepare a yearly review of achievements for the Illuminating Engineering Society.” This year’s report will be presented on October 28, 2013 at the IES Annual Conference in Huntington Beach, California and at regional IES Chapter meetings throughout the coming year. In addition, a summary of the report will be published in the January 2014 issue of LD+A magazine.
