NEWARK, Del.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--The American Red Cross Delmarva Region partnered with Sallie Mae earlier today for a Holiday Mail for Heroes event at the company’s corporate headquarters in Newark. Sallie Mae employees came together to sign and sort holiday cards which the Red Cross will distribute to the men and women serving in the armed forces, veterans, and military families during the upcoming holiday season.
“As a veteran of the Navy, I remember how great it felt on the day the mail came when I was serving abroad”
“The Holiday Mail for Heroes program is the effort of the American Red Cross to enable Americans to ‘Give Something That Means Something’ this holiday season,” said Patrick K. Delaney, American Red Cross Delmarva Region CEO. “We are so grateful to Sallie Mae and its employees for taking the time today to share a piece of home to a serviceperson who may be stationed far away from family and friends this holiday season. Also, thank you to Senator Tom Carper who stopped by today to lend a hand with the event—we greatly appreciate his continued support. This event is such a great way for all of us to thank our armed forces, veterans, and military families for their service.”
“As a veteran of the Navy, I remember how great it felt on the day the mail came when I was serving abroad,” said U.S. Sen. Tom Carper. “I support this program which reminds service members who can't be home for the holidays that we are thinking of them and grateful for their sacrifice.”
“On behalf of my colleagues at Sallie Mae, I am grateful to participate in today’s event,” said Mark Addison, a Sallie Mae employee and veteran of the war in Afghanistan. “Sacrifices are made every second, every hour, every day by our service men and women. I will always be thankful for the care packages and letters that were sent to my comrades and me while I was deployed to Afghanistan. Nothing warmed my heart more than to receive care packages from home and my Sallie Mae coworkers. Whether it was a letter, small gift, or a simple note that said ‘Thank You,’ it brought a piece of family to an always moving and lonely place.”
The public is also invited to send cards of thanks, encouragement, and holiday cheer to members of our U.S. Armed Forces, veterans, and their military families, many of whom will be far away from home and serving in harm’s way this holiday season.
