To mark the launch of its new specialized Latino Outreach Sub-Committee, leading health organization AIDS Healthcare Foundation will provide free HIV and STD testing from 11 am to 5 pm on Tuesday, October 15 through a mobile testing unit parked at the corner of S. Alvarado Street and Wilshire Boulevard at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. Radio K-Love 107.5 FM is co-hosting the launch.
“We’re very excited to provide this free testing opportunity all day to the underserved Latino community of Los Angeles,” said Alex Goncalvez, AHF’s Associate Director of Mobile Testing Programs. “This new sub-committee is very important to our organization because we feel this community deserves better access to testing and treatment, as well as advertising that is in Spanish to eliminate any potential language barriers that could have been keeping people from knowing their status or accessing care.”
According to the County of Los Angeles Public Health Department HIV Plan, Latinos comprise the largest number of people living with HIV in Los Angeles County at 40.3%. Additionally, of the estimated 10,500 LA County residents who are HIV-positive and unaware of their status, 44% – or 4,620 individuals – are Latino.
