SAN FRANCISCO--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--The San Francisco Ronald McDonald House (RMH-SF) announced today that it has raised $5 million of the $8.2 million fundraising goal of its Hearts and Hands campaign. The multi-year comprehensive fundraising campaign enables the organization to triple the number of families served in the Bay Area annually. Fundraising continues this month with the annual Home Away From Home gala event taking place Oct. 18 at the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco.
“The home away from home that the Ronald McDonald House provides through both the children’s bedside programs and the much needed housing will allow us to assist over 6,000 families a year.”
Through the Hearts and Hands Campaign, in February 2015, RMH-SF will open a second House inside the new UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital currently under construction at Mission Bay. The House inside the Hospital will serve families in the first stages of crisis - for example, children rushed by helicopter or emergency vehicle to the hospital.
Plans call for a 5,300-square-foot facility, including 11 new guest rooms, a living room and entertainment center, laundry facilities, kitchen, dining area and other amenities. RMH-SF projects the new House will serve about 242 more families each year, for a total of approximately 360.
RMH-SF also anticipates growing its Hospital-based Programs, launched in 2008 and now serving over 3,000 families per year at Benioff Children’s Hospital. These programs help families keeping vigil and sleeping at their child’s bedside. The Hospital-Based Programs include:
*The Child’s Bedside Program. Volunteers go room-to-room visiting parents and other family members who are “camped out” at their child’s bedside, bringing beverages, supplies, and a listening ear to families in crisis.
*Parent Support Events. A peer support program that helps parents build a supportive community within the hospital. The events include a simple meal, during which families get to know each other and receive the assistance of RMH and UCSF staff.
*New Pilot Program. Specially trained and screened volunteers will stay with a young patient to give the parent(s) the chance to step away for an hour and take care of family business, have a meal or simply walk in the fresh air.
“Through the support of benefactors in the San Francisco community, we have embraced the opportunity to expand the footprint of the Ronald McDonald House in San Francisco to the new UCSF campus at Mission Bay,” said Alexander Leonard, San Francisco Ronald McDonald House board member and chairman of the Hearts and Hands campaign. “The home away from home that the Ronald McDonald House provides through both the children’s bedside programs and the much needed housing will allow us to assist over 6,000 families a year.”
Fundraising continues later this month, at the annual Home Away From Home Gala event on October 18. The gala Masters of Ceremonies Cheryl Jennings and Mike Nicco from ABC7 will host the evening’s seated dinner, live and silent auctions, and musical entertainment by Pride & Joy. “The Gala is the most significant fundraising event of the year for the San Francisco Ronald McDonald House," said Judith Hall, San Francisco Ronald McDonald House board member. “Our sincere gratitude goes out to Studley, Torys LLP and Loveall Foundation for Children for their presenting sponsorships and the other wonderful organizations sponsoring this year’s Gala. Their generosity makes it possible for the Ronald McDonald House to provide much needed support to families of children in crisis."
As an independent, not-for-profit organization, RMH-SF relies on the community and our generous donors for funds required to provide essential services to sick children and their families. Individuals can support the RMH-SF by becoming a volunteer, making a donation, and/or purchasing a ticket to the upcoming Home Away From Home Gala fundraiser.
