HALIFAX, Nova Scotia--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--More than 150 life sciences innovators and entrepreneurs, investors, international speakers and industry supporters are in Halifax today for Atlantic Canada’s premier annual life sciences event. BioPort Atlantic, hosted by BioNova, Nova Scotia’s life sciences association is being held at the Westin Nova Scotian.

This year’s conference theme is BOLD IDEAS for BIG OPPORTUNITIES which reflects the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in the Atlantic region.
“The program and speaker line-up for this year’s conference should appeal to the region’s life sciences community,” said Marli MacNeil, CEO of BioNova. “With at least seven investors from Canada and the US and industry leaders such as the presidents of Sanofi Canada and Medtronic of Canada in the room, we expect a productive event.”
BioPort will kick off with Robert Orr, Honourary Conference Chair. Orr is one of the founders and former President & CEO of Ocean Nutrition Canada, and is now CEO & Managing Director of Cuna del Mar, a family office, private equity fund based in the USA.
The conference’s keynote lunchtime speaker, Dr. Annabelle Volgman, MD, FACC, is a cardiologist, professor of medicine and medical director of the Heart Center for Women at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Other session topics include The C-Change- The New Collaboration Needed to Bring Life Sciences Innovation into Canada’s Healthcare System, Financing in ’14 and The Future’s So Bright.
One of the highlights of the day will be the finals for the BioInnovation Challenge. The competition was created to help ease the transition from research laboratory to market. The three finalists, chosen from the semi-finals the day before, will have been selected for the perceived market pull and commercialization potential of their technologies and are vying for a grand prize consisting of $15,000 seed funding and an advisory services package worth more than $20,000. The finalists will pitch to the Commercialization Council and the conference audience and the winner will be announced at the end of the day.
