PALO ALTO, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Ravello Systems, the industry’s first Cloud Application Hypervisor provider, today announced that ScanCafe, the number one photo digitization and photo concierge service in the world, has adopted the Ravello Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) for its development and test operations. By using Ravello, ScanCafe has achieved 50 percent acceleration in testing cycles and an overall 20 percent acceleration in project delivery, with the ability to spin up new environments in only five minutes, versus two days.
“Our tech-savvy customers and partners alike demand dynamic features in our photo scanning system, so we must deliver innovative capabilities as rapidly as possible to maintain our best-of-breed reputation and stand out among competitive offerings”
“Our tech-savvy customers and partners alike demand dynamic features in our photo scanning system, so we must deliver innovative capabilities as rapidly as possible to maintain our best-of-breed reputation and stand out among competitive offerings,” said Laurent Martin, president and CTO, ScanCafe. “This requires fast product development cycles and the ability to add new features quickly and efficiently. In addition to customer demands, more than 130 partners integrate into the ScanCafe system so responding to all their integration requests in a timely manner is no small task.”
Development and Test Acceleration Needed For Faster Time to Market
ScanCafe’s worldwide photo scanning business requires an online portal for customers to place orders and track shipments. With close to 100 million images scanned, resulting in many terabytes of data, and global operations across the U.S., Europe, India and Bhutan, ScanCafe not only deals with massive customer data but also requires agility to respond to requests from customers and partners in a timely manner. ScanCafe also has an intricate IT environment using a combination of physical data centers, the public cloud, and hosting providers in various regions, and integrates with an e-commerce engine and multiple other modules to process the images and manage delivery logistics.
ScanCafe needed to add a new SMS or text alert capability to its existing system so that customers could be instantly notified of order shipments and delivery. However, this new feature touched multiple parts of the application and had a lot of interdependencies across modules. It involved two days to set up a new test environment with manual provisioning for the right infrastructure, application configuration and validation. Then, testing the code cycled every three to five days. Resource constraints and the lack of self-service to test copies of the environment slowed the process, and critical workflow issues were not found until late in the process within integration testing environment.
More Efficient and Agile Testing Using Ravello and the HP Public Cloud
Looking to speed up its manual development and test environment in a cost-effective manner, ScanCafe turned to Ravello. Using the Ravello SaaS, ScanCafe simplified and quickened its manual development and test process and has achieved 50 percent acceleration in testing cycles and 20 percent acceleration in overall project delivery. The IT operations team uploaded their existing virtual machines, saved a blueprint of their own application environment, including the same virtual machines, networking and storage, and now uses self-service access to create multiple instances of the entire application environment with one click in the HP Public Cloud.
ScanCafe is able to accelerate time to market and efficiently deliver complex features like their SMS system, which touched multiple modules and required a lot of integration testing. ScanCafe is now able to spin up new environments in five minutes, compared to two days of manual effort it took earlier. Developers are easily able to create an instance of the latest environment, so maintenance of local environments is no longer an overhead.
“It is important that Ravello makes it easy to spin up and tear down environments so enterprise development teams save on costs by creating environments only when needed,” said Navin Thadani, senior vice president of products, Ravello Systems. “By delivering our software on-demand, we help to keep costs low for customers like ScanCafe – so teams only pay for what they use when testing is needed, and then can turn it off when not in use.”
With Ravello it is possible to perform more frequent integration testing on instances that are representative of production. ScanCafe is looking forward to continuing its relationship and is considering moving its production environment into Ravello so that they can move closer to a continuous deployment model.
