SAN DIEGO--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--The Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF), a world leader in helping individuals with physical challenges get involved and stay involved in sports, on Sunday hosted Heather Abbott and three other Boston Marathon survivors at its CAF Össur Leg Amputee Running and Mobility Clinic held at Harvard University.
“Congratulations to all the athletes who braved the rainy conditions and participated in the clinic today”
On Saturday, Oct. 5, CAF – in partnership with Össur and Knights of Columbus – presented Abbott with a running leg at a private reception held at NikeTown Boston. Heather is the first survivor from the Boston Marathon to receive an adaptive running prosthetic.
At the clinic, Abbott was joined by Celeste and Sydney Corcoran and Roseann Sdoia, as well as 38 other amputees from around Boston and across the Northeast. The amputees, ranging in age from three to 83, received coaching from renowned amputee running and sports training experts Bob Gailey, PhD, PT and Peter Harsch, CP.
The day began with active stretching and progressed through a series of skill-building exercises that taught participants how to properly fire the muscles in their residual limb and sound side to get the most out of their prosthesis. It concluded with the “Grand Finale” where all participants engaged in a fun obstacle course relay where they tested their new-found skills running forwards, backwards and side-to-side.
After the Boston Marathon bombings left dozens suffering amputations, CAF established a fund specifically designated to assist these individuals. Just as CAF and its partners provided Heather Abbott with her running leg, they will continue to provide grants and support to the other survivors to help them return to an active lifestyle.
“Congratulations to all the athletes who braved the rainy conditions and participated in the clinic today,” said Virginia Tinley, CAF’s Executive Director. “It is a true testament to their desire to be active participants in the game of life, and hopefully today many took the first step towards a lifetime of sports and fitness.”
CAF runs more than 20 adaptive sports clinics annually across the United States and has assisted hundreds of leg amputees of all ages and abilities to learn how to run or just move better — whether learning how to run for the first time, or improving gait to compete at a Paralympic level.
