“Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers brought to you by Ashford University.”
Now in its 23rd year, the Academy Awards-style television special honors San Diego County’s 26,000 public school teachers.
The 2013-2014 County Teacher of the Year nominees for San Diego County Teacher of the Year were selected earlier this year on the basis of student achievement, teaching philosophy and the ability to serve as ambassadors of education. By the end of the evening, five of the 45 teachers nominated by their school districts this year will be announced as San Diego County Teachers of the Year and will represent the county in the California Teacher of the Year recognition program.
Award-winning San Diego broadcast journalist Dennis Morgigno is back to emcee the event. Raised in California's Central Valley, Morgigno began his journalism career as a reporter at the Merced Sun-Star daily newspaper. Moving to television, he served as news anchor and reporter with the NBC affiliate in Fresno and came to San Diego in 1978 as a reporter and anchor for what is now NBC 7. He has also worked at KUSI-TV and in Los Angeles at KTTV-TV Channel 11. He currently serves as Director of Original Programming and Communications for Cox Communications’ California operations.
HLN news anchor and reporter Kyra Phillips, who is also a graduate of Helix High School in San Diego, is back to join Morgigno as co-host of the live event. Phillips earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Southern California, joined CNN in 1999 and moved to HLN in 2012 to lead the network’s 2012 election coverage. She currently anchors “Raising America,” a daytime interactive broadcast that looks at the news from a parent’s point of view.
