BOSTON--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Health Dialog today announced multiple initiatives to provide women affected by breast cancer and their families with the tools and resources they need to make more informed decisions about their condition and treatment. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2013, making it the second leading cause of cancer death in females, exceeded only by lung cancer.1
“Health Dialog’s commitment to patient empowerment not only complements our mission but also strengthens our efforts to assist patients and their families across Massachusetts.”
Health Dialog will be making its patient decision aids and planning aids on breast cancer publically available throughout the month of October. The aids can be accessed by clicking here. Health Dialog will team up with the Informed Medical Decision Foundation, whose medical editors provide medical review of the decision aids, to ensure widespread distribution and access of these health aids to women and their families.
Health Dialog’s early stage breast cancer and breast reconstruction surgery decision aids help guide patients through all stages of the decision making process, from explaining how to read a pathology report to illustrating what a patient can expect from different types of surgeries. Health Dialog also offers planning aids for patients and families who are having needle or breast biopsies to prepare for what will happen before, during and after the procedures. Patient-friendly explanations of medical terms, comparisons of treatment choices, photos, videos, diagrams, and a printable booklet enable patients to become active, engaged and informed as they make the medical decisions that are best for them.
“Facing a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming,” said Robert Mandel, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Health Dialog. “At Health Dialog, we believe information is one of the best tools a patient can arm themselves with. All of our efforts in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month are in the interest of providing women and their families with access to resources which help them better understand their condition and treatment options so they can feel more confident when making critical decisions.”
Health Dialog has also announced that they are partnering with the Ellie Fund, a Boston area-based nonprofit organization that fights breast cancer by easing its effects on women and families across Massachusetts. Health Dialog and the Ellie Fund will work together during October to help raise awareness for breast cancer and assist the families affected by the disease. Health Dialog will also make a contribution to the Ellie Fund’s Do Good Campaign.
“The mission of the Ellie Fund is fight breast cancer by easing its effects on women and families across Massachusetts. We do this by providing essential support services such as transportation, childcare, housekeeping and delivered meals,” said Jeff Popkin, Founder and Board President, Ellie Fund. “Health Dialog’s commitment to patient empowerment not only complements our mission but also strengthens our efforts to assist patients and their families across Massachusetts.”
