HOUSTON--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--DaVita®, a division of DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. (NYSE: DVA) and a leading provider of kidney care services, is encouraging East Texans to take a 60-second quiz to learn about their risk for kidney disease. The quiz can be found at DaVita.com/KidneyAware.
“Because CKD occurs over a long period of time – often years – those impacted may not notice any symptoms until there is a significant loss of kidney function. This is why CKD is a silent, but devastating disease.”
More than 80 percent of people nationwide who have taken the quiz found out that they have at least two risk factors for kidney disease, which is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States.
One in 10 adults age 20 or older in the United States has chronic kidney disease (CKD), and many others are at risk and don’t even know it. Risk factors include:
- High blood pressure
- Cardio vascular disease
- Family history of kidney disease
- Age of 55 or older
Furthermore, African Americans are nearly four times more likely to face kidney disease than their white counterparts; Hispanic Americans are twice as likely; and Native Americans and people of Asian or Pacific Islander descent also have an elevated risk for CKD.
“What most people don’t realize is that kidney disease often goes unchecked because standard blood tests don’t reveal compromised kidney function,” said Chakilla Robinson, DaVita’s vice president for operations in Houston. “Because CKD occurs over a long period of time – often years – those impacted may not notice any symptoms until there is a significant loss of kidney function. This is why CKD is a silent, but devastating disease.”
The fact is that there are few or no symptoms in the early stages of CKD. It is typically not until the late stages of CKD that noticeable changes occur in the body. Some of these symptoms may include high blood pressure; regularly feeling tired, dizzy or nauseated; swelling in the feet, hands or face; back pain; or a change in frequency – more or less – of urination.
