BOSTON--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--In honor of World Heart Day and to help Americans live healthier, happier lives, Health Dialog today announced it is encouraging Americans to ramp up their walking with friends, family, colleagues and communities.
“We strongly believe in the philosophy of whole person health as the best way to improve individuals’ health and wellness, and the overall quality of care”
The effort, part of a larger global walking challenge called Ground Miles, aims to get people around the world to walk a collective five million miles to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. To support the Ground Miles challenge and help people measure the distance they walk, Bupa and the World Heart Federation have created a Ground Miles app, a free app that can be downloaded from the iTunes store for the iPhones and from Google Play for Android users.
Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) is the number one cause of death worldwide, accounting for more than 17 million deaths every year. Yet, also according to the WHO, 80 percent of all heart disease and stroke would be prevented if the main risk factors were eliminated.
“We strongly believe in the philosophy of whole person health as the best way to improve individuals’ health and wellness, and the overall quality of care,” said Robert Mandel, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Health Dialog. “By encouraging people to walk—a free and fun activity that actively gets them engaged in their own health and wellness—we can help people reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. When coupled with additional support including access to tools and resources people need to make more informed choices about their wellbeing, we can make a positive impact.”
As added incentive, those people that get motivated and walk more can win vacations throughout the Ground Miles Challenge. And, when the 5 million mile mark is reached, Bupa will make a contribution to the World Heart Federation which will be used to support programs that protect thousands of children in Africa and South Asia from heart failure and early death, as a result of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD).
