PALO ALTO, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--The market for research tools is estimated at a staggering $5B with double-digit annual growth rates. However, the tools available today either require intensive training or yield long lists of barely related, keyword-based search results. Co-founder and Chief Visionary Officer of Unsilo, Mads Rydahl, explains how his company seeks to make life easier and more rewarding for researchers and R&D professionals:
“Unsilo has been able to drive product innovation and provide amazing insights for their early test partners. We believe that the company’s approach to cross-domain research will revolutionize the way companies and institutions all over the world solve their real-life challenges.”
"A chemist might look for research in a chemistry journal. But real ground-breaking discoveries often emerge across numerous disciplinary fields and patent databases almost simultaneously. Unsilo dynamically identifies such clusters of related documents across seemingly unrelated domains, by matching the meaning of user queries, not just the words," says Rydahl, who worked as Senior Director of Product Design at Siri, the digital assistant acquired by Apple, before co-founding Unsilo in early 2012.
Unsilo built its patent pending semantic search technology while conducting heavy user-testing with big industry partners, accelerating the development of its customizable Unsilo UI. The first Unsilo licenses are already rolling off the shelves ahead of the public launch in November.
The launch is made possible by an investment from Scale Capital, a Copenhagen/Palo Alto based venture firm investing in early-stage technology ventures. Partner at Scale Capital, Lars Jensen, says he is impressed by the development speed and the dedication of the Unsilo team:
"Unsilo has been able to drive product innovation and provide amazing insights for their early test partners. We believe that the company’s approach to cross-domain research will revolutionize the way companies and institutions all over the world solve their real-life challenges."
How Unsilo works:
Searching with Unsilo, you'll find thousands of matching documents from different industries and scientific fields, presented under a handful of headlines. Each headline represents a context based cluster providing a quick overview of the main trends by “similarity in approach,” rather than by scientific discipline, making it easy to find your phenomenon-of-interest in an unexpected setting.
Unsilo is a so-called semantic search engine, so if you search for "improve air flow through turbines," you not only get a list of documents that contain the exact words you used - as you would in a Google search - you also get results with a similar meaning, for example "controlling the movement of gasses in compression chambers."
With this approach, Unsilo is able to find relevant research from distant scientific fields and patent documents, which would not be uncovered using conventional search. The chemist seeking answers in the specialized journals he already knows, can now find relevant interdisciplinary knowledge alongside the most relevant articles from his own field with Unsilo - he can even instantly see which companies have filed for related patents.
Users can share their insights with colleagues or collaborators, build reading lists, or find inspiration in what other users are working on.
With Unsilo’s “MyBrain” feature, users can add articles they authored, patents their clients own, or other documents they have a specific interest in. Notifications are then displayed when searches of other users hit those specific documents. This has already proven valuable for companies looking for alternative applications of existing research or inventions.

Unsilo is an engaged and inspired team with PhD and Post Grad experience in text mining, data integration and pattern matching algorithms. Team members have filed and executed more than a dozen search-related patents and pioneered product development at numerous Silicon Valley companies. In doing this, they developed an acute awareness of the workflows and pain points of IP and R&D professionals, prompting the creation of Unsilo.
Last year Unsilo launched MedQL.com, a research tool that helps geneticists discover hidden relationships between genes and diseases, based on evidence extracted from the 20M+ articles in Medline. Unsilo is headquartered in Aarhus, Denmark with offices in Palo Alto, California.
