LOS ANGELES--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Following is a statement from the board of directors and executive management of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) in response to concerns recently raised in public by some AHF medical providers:

We are a non-profit organization that has consistently spent 96 cents of every dollar we bring in on care. Our records are open to the public.
We respect the right of staff employees to unionize. Unfortunately, management employees are leading the current organizing effort. As a result, we have a pending unfair labor practice complaint filed with the National Labor Relations Board. The managers are pre-empting the established labor procedures enacted by the U.S. government to protect line staff from harassment by their supervisors who are not permitted to be in a union. These managers are attempting to bypass the process by trying to win in the press what they have not won from the labor board.
Medical providers at AHF run our medical program. Our clinics are run solely by doctors, who report to a regional medical director, who reports to the chief of medicine, who reports jointly to the board of directors and the CEO. The primary issue in dispute is how many patients each provider will be required to see on a daily basis. A consensus was reached many years ago with providers that they would see fourteen patients per day—which is far below the norm in medicine. Unfortunately, in recent years, this fell to eleven patients being seen per day. The result of seeing few patients, coupled with doctors and providers blocking their schedules, was patients waiting up to ten weeks for an appointment. This resulted in thousands of our patients falling out of care, which is intolerable to us.”
AHF has thrived over twenty-six years because we have stayed ahead of the curve; built a strong base of support with clients; dealt with many crises; and reinvested in building a bigger and better system of care. As a result we have created the largest and most successful AIDS organization in the world. We make no apologies for our success. We look forward to working with all of our staff to continue to grow and improve our care system.
