SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Tower MSA Partners President Rita Wilson will keynote the Association of Workers’ Compensation Professionals 15th Annual Fall Educational Conference on Oct. 11. Her presentation, “Medications and Medicare Set-Asides: Controlling the Madness!” outlines strategies for staging a claim for an MSA, identifying future medical and pharmacy costs, and developing strategies to reduce them.
“Medications and Medicare Set-Asides: Controlling the Madness!”
“Most payers suffer sticker shock from future pharmacy spend, which can be hundreds of thousands of dollars on a single MSA,” Wilson said.
“Controlling the Madness” walks through Medicare Secondary Payer regulatory requirements, identifying when and how Medicare’s interests must be considered in a workers’ compensation claim settlement and the challenges of finding the right balance among care, cost and compliance. Early identification of clinically inappropriate medication using evidence-based medical guidelines, working with treating physicians to change drug therapy and ongoing involvement to ensure that changes actually occur can produce positive outcomes and ensure Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ acceptance.
“Total savings from pre-MSA interventions can be huge,” Wilson added. “In our experience, reductions of as much of $700,000 have been achieved and approved by CMS when identification and intervention occur before the MSA.”
Her presentation also highlights early intervention techniques for managing workers’ compensation pharmacy to reduce the overall cost of the claim long before the MSA process begins.
AWCP’s 15th Annual Fall Educational Conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Red Lion Woodlake Conference Center in Sacramento, Calif. For more information, please see the program at http://awcp.org/DOCS/2013/AWCP%20Conf%20Bro%202013_WEB.pdf.
