CHICAGO--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--iBIO today announced state Reps. Patricia Bellock (R-Hinsdale) and Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) as the honorees for the 2013 John W Maitland Jr Biotechnology Leadership Award. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Oct. 17 at Astellas Pharma US headquarters in Northbrook, Ill. from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
“Her work has certainly saved and enhanced peoples’ lives here in Illinois.”
This year state Rep. Patricia Bellock (R-Hinsdale) will be honored for her leadership in resolving the state's Medicaid fiscal challenges. Bellock has dedicated her efforts to public health, including the passage of last year's Smart Act balancing Medicaid cost savings and patient access to health care. Her leadership with health care stakeholders, including patient advocacy organizations, health care providers, health care systems and medication manufacturers has played a vital role in shaping the new approach to Illinois' Medicaid program.
“Illinois Representative Patti Bellock is well known in Springfield as a tireless champion for patients’ access to critically important medicines and medical care,” said David Miller, president and CEO of iBIO. “Her work has certainly saved and enhanced peoples’ lives here in Illinois.”
State Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) will be honored for her leadership on legislation that would address the fiscal crisis caused by Illinois’ historic failure to deal with pension reform. She teamed up with 2012 John W Maitland Jr Award winner state Sen. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) to craft and champion legislation that would sharply reduce the state’s debt load and restore fiscal integrity to Illinois’ pension funds.
“It's easy to see that Elaine Nekritz is a dedicated and ethical public servant. Working shoulder to shoulder with her on pension reform, I've learned that in addition, she is brilliant, savvy, tenacious and absolutely fearless,” said Biss. “Elaine is highly deserving of this recognition.”
The John W Maitland Jr Biotechnology Leadership Award is given annually to elected or appointed government officials who have provided outstanding support to the Illinois biotechnology community.
"Astellas is thrilled to be hosting this year's John W Maitland Jr Award ceremony to honor those that have shown extraordinary contributions to the Illinois biotechnology community," said Linda Eason, director of government affairs for Astellas US and co-chair of the iBIO Government Affairs Committee. "I want to personally congratulate Illinois Representative Patti Bellock and Illinois Representative Elaine Nekritz on receiving this great honor for all of their work on behalf of the Illinois community.
