COSTA MESA, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--NWP Services Corporation (NWP), the multi-housing industry’s leading provider of utility cost recovery and energy management solutions, announced that on September 13, the final day of the 2013 California Legislative Session, SB 750 did not clear the California Assembly.
“NWP representatives spent considerable time in Sacramento in direct meetings with lawmakers to discuss our owners’ reservations with the bill. That advocacy and the letter campaign conducted by our customers ensured that the legislation will have more time to be vetted and improved”
“NWP would like to sincerely thank all of our California customers who worked with us to write letters to lawmakers and helped put the brakes on this legislation. While NWP applauds the sponsors of the legislation for their commitment to conservation issues, we are pleased that lawmakers decided more time was needed to address very significant issues,” stated Ron Reed, the president and chief operating officer of NWP. “NWP representatives spent considerable time in Sacramento in direct meetings with lawmakers to discuss our owners’ reservations with the bill. That advocacy and the letter campaign conducted by our customers ensured that the legislation will have more time to be vetted and improved,” added Reed.
Among the hazards for apartment owners were draconian penalties for noncompliance, unmanageable billing proscriptions, many ambiguous definitions and an absence of language that would ensure other billing regimes such as RUBS would remain legal. “It is expected Senator Wolk will seek to move the legislation forward in the 2014 session, and NWP is committed to working with her and other lawmakers to ensure all issues affecting our clients are carefully considered,” said Lana Reeve, senior vice-president and general counsel for NWP.
NWP will conduct a webinar in the upcoming month to educate customers on the most recent language in the bill and how it could affect their operations. NWP will also work with legislators and stakeholders to shape any upcoming legislation into a well thought out bill that carefully considers all parties’ interests and effectively serves the desired effect of promoting conservation.
