CINCINNATI--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Imagine a world in which your surroundings are protected against some of today’s most serious and sometimes deadly bacterial infections. Protein Express Laboratories, a bioscience company dedicated to developing novel solutions to complex microbiological problems, today filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for PEL-421, a groundbreaking non-toxic surface disinfectant and prophylactic that provides immediate and lasting protection against a broad range of bacteria, including staph and its historically resistant MRSA variant.
“We are all aware of the devastating effects of staph infections acquired in hospital, athletic, educational, and other public and private facilities,” said Dr. Zsolt Hertelendy, Protein Express’ Director of Product Development. “PEL-421 offers a solution that is not available in the current market – one that not only kills deadly bacteria but also leaves a lasting effect to protect against recontamination.”
PEL-421 product formulations consist of up to four reagents, each by itself having a very low toxicity profile. They are free of bleach, alcohol, peroxides, and other oxidants and corrosives. Together, the reagents work synergistically to kill bacteria on surfaces at lower concentrations than any of them would individually. The reagents degrade very slowly, providing surfaces with protection against recontamination for up to five days.

The demand for disinfectant and antimicrobial chemicals is forecast to grow six percent annually to $1.6 billion in 2017, according to a June 2013 report on the U.S. Disinfectant & Antimicrobial Chemicals Market by The Freedonia Group.
Protein Express next plans to pursue regulatory approval for household, institutional, and medical applications of PEL-421.
