DENVER--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Anthem) today announced its associates and foundation will combine to donate as much as $125,000 to the American Red Cross for the Colorado Flood Relief Effort.
“The victims of these storms are our friends, family and neighbors. Our foundation is pleased to be able to provide this donation to help them get back on their feet, and we thank the Red Cross for all they are doing for our communities.”
Strong storms over the course of the past week in Colorado have caused widespread flooding and damage, closed roads and destroyed homes throughout the state. To date, emergency management officials said nearly 17,500 homes were damaged, some 1,500 homes were destroyed and 11,700 people were ordered evacuated. Staff from the American Red Cross are currently on the ground in all the affected counties, providing assistance to those impacted by the storms.
"Our hearts and thoughts go out to those affected by the recent storms and flooding," said Mike Ramseier, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Colorado. "The victims of these storms are our friends, family and neighbors. Our foundation is pleased to be able to provide this donation to help them get back on their feet, and we thank the Red Cross for all they are doing for our communities."
In addition, Anthem on Friday announced it is adjusting medical and pharmacy guidelines for members throughout the state impacted by the floods. Anthem’s relaxed guidelines include suspending early refill limits for prescriptions, allowing payment for replacement of covered Durable Medical Equipment of supplies for impacted members who call in and offering free telephonic counseling and referral services to members though Anthem’s Employee Assistance Program.
The funds will be used by the Red Cross to provide support and assistance to victims of the storms including: food, shelter and clothing; home clean up assistance; temporary housing; emergency medical assistance, such as prescription medication replacement, and help with eyeglass, denture, hearing aid replacement; and mental health services.
Anthem’s foundation is making a $25,000 contribution to the Red Cross for flood relief efforts and also announced a dollar for dollar match of Anthem associate contributions up to $50,000, for a potential total donation of $125,000.
This donation underscores Anthem’s longstanding support of the Red Cross. Anthem’s parent company is one of only ten $1 million donors to the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program, ensuring the organization is able to respond immediately to the needs of those impacted by disaster. Anthem associates, including its foundation match, also pledged $65,000 to the Red Cross in Colorado for 2013 through our annual Associate Giving Campaign.
