ANAHEIM, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Americas' SAP Users' Group (ASUG), the world's largest independent community of SAP professionals, announced the winner of its second annual ASUG Developer Wars during the 2013 ASUG SAP® BusinessObjects™ User Conference, Sept. 9-11 in Anaheim, Calif.
“This is such a fun way to showcase what analytics tools can do. This isn’t about the technology; it’s about demonstrating the business value the SAP tools can help deliver for a worthy cause.”
Working with data provided by City Year, an education-focused, nonprofit organization that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate, teams of developers had less than 48 hours to create a compelling data analysis and dashboard visualization. The SAP-sponsored competition, which culminated in a live presentation at the conference on Tuesday, September 10, featured the Dev War teams showing off their skills with SAP BusinessObjects solutions to a standing room only audience.
“Last year’s Developer Wars was so successful that I knew I wanted to be part of it this year,” said Chris Crone, ASUG Board of Directors member, who served on the judges panel. “This is such a fun way to showcase what analytics tools can do. This isn’t about the technology; it’s about demonstrating the business value the SAP tools can help deliver for a worthy cause.”
Four teams competed for this year’s bragging rights, and each team brought its own creative application and delivery to the challenge, using SAP Lumira™, SAP Predictive Analysis, SAP Crystal Reports®, and SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards software to take City Year’s data and use it to solve a critical business issue. The teams – Optimal Optimizers, Dashboard Divas, Bollywood Spartans, and The Big Data Theory – developed themes and characters to present their data-driven solutions to a panel of five judges, which included City Year Senior Vice President and CIO Welles Hatch.
“I really appreciated the enthusiasm these teams brought to applying business intelligence to our work,” said Hatch. “I'm excited to take all this creative and insightful data back to City Year to demonstrate what I call ‘the realm of the possible’."
The teams were judged on four evenly weighted criteria: effectiveness in addressing the business issue, analytical functionality, presentation and fun factor, and ease of use. The Bollywood Spartans were named this year’s Developer Wars champions, winning the hearts and minds of the judges and the cheers of the audience. The judges applauded the Bollywood Spartans for its bold and risky presentation strategy, bringing Hatch onstage to illustrate how even a new user would find the team’s dashboard analytics easy to navigate.
For its participation in the ASUG Developer Wars challenge, City Year received valuable data insights as well as SAP software solutions used in the challenge. In addition to earning the title of Developer Wars champion, the Bollywood Spartans team members each won a Slingbox®, a device that allows users to stream television content from any device with an internet connection.
