LONDON--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Recent analysis undertaken by Generator Research shows that smart watches will become a huge global industry.
“When you look at the latest smart watches you’ve got to ask yourself ‘Are these watches really that smart?”
Generator’s projections show that worldwide shipments of smart watches in 2018 will be in the region of 214 million units while the retail value of the market at this time will be USD 62.2 billion.
However, a new generation of smart watch products will be required to achieve these figures: “When you look at the latest smart watches you’ve got to ask yourself ‘Are these watches really that smart?”, asks Andrew Sheehy, chief analyst at Generator Research.
A cursory look at a number of key enabling technologies shows that even products like Samsung’s Galaxy Gear should be regarded as an initial step at the beginning of a technological journey:
- It is technically possible to produce a smart watch that includes a SIM card along with all the electronics and software needed for the device to function as a mobile phone.
- Products like Apple Siri, Google Voice Search and Samsung S-Voice indicate that we will soon be able to control device features and network services by voice, thereby obviating the need for a full touch screen interface;
- AI-based network intelligence would mean that functions such as calling a local business, identifying and calling a business contact, sending a message, making a note of an important task, managing a calendar and setting alarms and many more could be accomplished without a touch interface;
- A fully-optimised smart watch OS, which was based on voice control, would require a major re-think of how a mobile OS works and also how developers produce apps.
“If these technological ingredients were combined into a single product then we really would have a smart watch,” says Sheehy.
Generator notes how Apple transformed the PC industry by commercialising the graphic user interface. “An opportunity now exists to transform the mobile interface. The company which pulls this off will drive the mobile business for the coming decades,” notes Sheehy.
