BOSTON--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--ConnectEDU, a technology company helping students make connections between education and career, has been selected by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as a recipient of its Literacy Courseware Challenge Grant. The grant was awarded to companies with a track record of innovation in education technology and will be used to develop personalized software to help students master reading and writing skills. ConnectEDU will develop a web-based teaching and learning platform that tracks student progress against literacy skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards and helps build skills through personalized recommendations for on-demand education courseware.
As nearly 70 percent of students in America struggle with literacy, teachers are increasingly adopting innovative classroom technology to help them deliver personalized instruction to every student. With the grant, ConnectEDU will develop a resource that addresses gaps in reading, writing, and comprehension by enabling teachers to offer timely, targeted instructional resources to their students based on their needs.
“Literacy is the foundation of learning,” said Evan Nisonson, CEO at ConnectEDU. “The tool we will build with this grant will empower teachers to provide the individualized instruction that their students need to master the rigorous reading and writing skills in the Common Core Standards. We are proud that the Gates Foundation believes in our ability to impact literacy and look forward to helping our country’s students graduate from high school ready to succeed in college and the workforce.”
Technology solutions developed as part of the Literacy Courseware Challenge will be piloted by teachers and fourth- to eighth-grade students in a network of public and charter schools beginning in January 2014.
