NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Council of Public Relations Firms (Council), the industry’s trade association, has named Ashley Varner from the College of William and Mary the winner of the inaugural “Take Flight with PR” video contest.
“My summer internship exposed me to the potential that public relations has to effectively engage with people as opposed to simply bombarding them with messages. That’s the message I wanted to convey in my video.”
Varner’s submission, “Oust the Earmuffs,” was a fully animated short that addressed the need for marketers to cut through the clutter, distinguish themselves in the marketplace, and engage in order to effectively reach consumers.
“The goal of this contest was to showcase the next generation of PR industry talent and their creative storytelling skills,” said Kathy Cripps, President of the Council of Public Relations Firms. “Ashley’s video stood out as visually striking, with a narrative that shared not only her understanding of the power of public relations but a passion for the work that goes into it.”
“When thinking of a concept for the video, I asked friends and colleagues what campaigns stood out to them and why, and that’s what led to the creation of ‘Oust the Earmuffs,’” said Varner, a senior majoring in art history. “My summer internship exposed me to the potential that public relations has to effectively engage with people as opposed to simply bombarding them with messages. That’s the message I wanted to convey in my video.”
Inviting participants to submit a video that, in three minutes or less, answered the prompt: “A career in PR is an opportunity for me to ______,” the contest ran from April 2nd to July 8th, attracting nearly 45,000 visitors and resulting in 24 entries from college students and PR firm interns from across the country.
After a round of crowd-sourced voting narrowed the field to 10 semi-finalists, a panel of judges from leading PR firms selected the winning submission. The prizes include: $2,500, a trip to New York City to premiere the video at the Council’s Annual Dinner on October 23rd, and the opportunity to meet with Council member firms.
The judges commended the work submitted during the contest, stating that collectively it portrayed a wide range of concepts and stories that reflected well both the many dimensions of the industry as well as the contestants’ skills for visual storytelling.
