Today’s Special: The M&A Landscape in Telecommunication
Two deals in the last few days are making headlines – Verizon’s much-awaited $130 billion acquisition of the 45% stake Vodafone held in it; and Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s handset business for $5 billion (and an additional $2.2 billion paid for a 10-year license to Nokia’s patents). Today’s Special analyzes the telecommunication acquisitions landscape, which is now the largest M&A sector in the world, in the light of these deals. The analysis strides through the changing face of global M&A and the premiums paid over the last ten years. It was auto sales and the Fed’s Beige Book that primarily drove market sentiment yesterday. The Beige Book reported “modest” to “moderate” growth across the country and an increase in consumer spending. Seasonally adjusted total vehicle sales data echoed the Beige Book’s positive outlook on the automobile industry. In an earlier article, we had already predicted this trend. We had based our forecast on easing lending standards and higher consumer confidence.
