DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SlimGenics Weight Control Centers (www.slimgenics.com), a leader in nutritionally based weight loss programs, launched the NObesity movement through the SlimGenics Foundation in March 2013 to increase awareness of, and support, the movement to prevent childhood obesity.
“If we all commit to making this change, we could end childhood obesity in this country.”
In honor of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and in keeping its commitment to the fight against childhood obesity, during September and October, SlimGenics Centers are offering reduced rate enrollments for youth and their parents to encourage the whole family to get healthy.
“It’s not a childhood obesity problem, it’s a family obesity problem, and we need to address this frightening epidemic with education, compassion and a commitment to making the whole family change their eating and lifestyle behaviors. We know children and teens emulate their parents, so the key is to get parents eating healthier themselves and teaching our youth how to do the same,” said Kim Christopher, program director of SlimGenics. “If we all commit to making this change, we could end childhood obesity in this country.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 12.5 million children in this country are obese, and childhood obesity rates have more than tripled in the last 10 years. Obese youth are more likely to develop serious health complications such as high cholesterol and pre-diabetes. They also suffer from emotional issues including poor self-esteem, which affects every aspect of their lives.
The SlimGenics Healthy Eating Program is not a diet or restrictive eating plan, nor is it based on pre-packaged meals or a point system. The program is designed to educate youth and their parents about SlimGenics’ proven science-based approach to weight loss, as well as its philosophy on everyday practices that will help the entire family reach, and maintain, a healthy weight. A professional team offers the one-on-one support, motivation and guidance needed to achieve this success.
The SlimGenics Foundation was established in 2010 with the mission of supporting organizations and programs that focus on providing nutritional education and preventing childhood obesity. SlimGenics has partnered with like-minded organizations in Colorado and Minnesota, such as LiveWell Colorado, Denver Urban Gardens, Appetite for Change, Youth Farm and 2040 Partners by funding specific programs that address the issues of childhood obesity and how to talk to youth about living a healthier lifestyle.
“Fighting childhood obesity has been a passion of mine ever since I started the company 10 years ago,” said Katherine Ott, CEO of SlimGenics. “We created the NObesity movement to help start a louder dialogue in our community about this growing epidemic, and in the years to come we’ll do whatever we can to support the movement to reduce childhood obesity.”
