English Language Arts Courses
Eight one-semester English language arts courses have been revised based on the Common Core State Standards requirements for grades nine to 10 and grades 11 to 12. Using standards-based, scaffolded instruction to equip next-generation students, the courses continuously develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, and literary and media analysis. Greater emphasis has been placed on assessing, speaking and listening, reading for information and writing. The English courses also require students to read and analyze a broad range of fiction and nonfiction texts, including technical and self-selected.
New features for Advanced Academics English courses include:
- Discussion threads requiring students to perform research, cite evidence, collaborate with peers and ask questions;
- Required chats with teachers requiring students to perform research, cite evidence, and ask and answer questions;
- Multimedia projects incorporating technology, research, synthesizing of multiple sources and mediums;
- Additional fiction and nonfiction texts providing range, quality and complexity;
- Speeches incorporating speaking and listening presentation standards; and
- Analysis and use of argument including claims, evidence, counterargument and rebuttal.
Advanced Academics’ ten new mathematics courses are built upon the Common Core State Standards required in every high school math class: number and quantity, algebra, functions, modeling, geometry, and statistics and probability. Increased emphasis was placed on modeling, or linking math to real-world situations and decision-making, in the math courses. Technology components were added to many lessons, such as helping students learn how to use graphing calculators and spreadsheet software to solve problems. In addition, each course has new application lessons, which allow students to see the connections between math and the real world.
