MASSILLON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SubscriberWise®, the leading provider of subscriber analytics and decision management technology and the nation’s largest issuing consumer reporting agency for the communications industry, announced today that David Howe, president of SubscriberWise, has been commanded to appear and testify on behalf of the State of Ohio in the Wayne County Common Pleas Court, Wayne County, Ohio. The criminal case includes a charge of 1 count of identity fraud, a 5th degree felony offense. The case is set for a jury trial in April.
“This was a simple but deliberate attempt to avoid a past due account and valuable unreturned equipment”
The case involves a service request which included a SubscriberWise® consumer report that returned a ‘Red Flag’ during the initial application. The alert was triggered by an SSN mismatch after the defendant provided a number that was one digit different from the file number contained in the SubscriberWise consumer report. An investigation of address history from SubscriberWise’s indicative information quickly revealed the defendant had an unpaid service account with unreturned cable equipment totaling over $500.00. Independent identity and information systems confirmed the SSN provided did not belong to the defendant.
“This was a simple but deliberate attempt to avoid a past due account and valuable unreturned equipment,” said SubscriberWise president David Howe. “Unfortunately for the defendant, her attempt to deceive the operator was instantly exposed by SubscriberWise’s ‘Red Flag’ technology. Nevertheless, I’m hopeful the defendant will acknowledge the evidence and accept a plea. Assuming she’s willing to acknowledge her mistake and return the cable equipment, I’d have no personal objection if the State of Ohio would dismiss the criminal charges entirely. In fact, I’d actually prefer it in this situation. And as the credit manager for MCTV, our company will welcome her back as a customer with the understanding she maintain an honest relationship going forward.”
SubscriberWise has been delivering federally compliant ‘Red Flag’ technology to its members around the country since 2008. The technology helps operators comply with requirements and guidelines to the Federal Trade Commission’s Identify Theft Prevention Regulations. The regulations are required of every U.S. cable and telecom operator.
