MAYNARD, Mass. and WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Monster Worldwide (NYSE: MWW), the worldwide leader in connecting people to job opportunities, and Military.com, the nation’s largest military and veteran membership organization, on Wednesday hosted an invitation-only event for human resource leaders who heard from, and engaged with, Veterans, senior Military and government officials and respected non-profit and private sector leaders about the most effective practices to prepare, support and connect Veterans to those employers that want to hire them.
“I was so proud to stand with CEO Sal Iannuzzi and acting Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank this morning to welcome Monster to the growing number of national businesses that are signing up to be part of the ‘I Hire Veterans’ project”
During the event, acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank announced that Monster is officially coming on board to support Joining Forces, a comprehensive national initiative led by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden. Joining Forces provides U.S. service members and their families with the opportunities and support they have earned, which means Monster will contribute to the initiative’s goal of hiring or training an additional 250,000 veterans and military spouses in the coming years.
“We were honored to bring together all the key stakeholders to participate in Wednesday’s Veterans Employment Summit here in Washington,” said Sal Iannuzzi, chairman, president and CEO for Monster. “Throughout the day, these leaders addressed what programs and best practices their organizations are doing to prepare and support veterans. Teaming with the Joining Forces initiative furthers Monster’s commitment to help connect Veterans, who offer a unique set of skills and leadership experience, to those employers looking for a diverse talent pool to join their workforce.”
“I was so proud to stand with CEO Sal Iannuzzi and acting Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank this morning to welcome Monster to the growing number of national businesses that are signing up to be part of the ‘I Hire Veterans’ project,” U.S. Senator Joe Manchin said. “As I've always said, if you want to help a vet, hire a vet. When consumers see businesses display our logo, they know that those businesses are truly walking the walk. Monster has demonstrated such an impressive commitment to ending veterans’ unemployment. With their leadership, Monster is going to be an important partner in getting our veterans back to work."
Participants represented over 150 employers, across a spectrum of industries and sizes with varying degrees of veteran recruitment programs in place. In addition to perspectives shared from government officials on the importance of veteran hiring, attendees heard from recently transitioned veterans on the challenges of their personal transitions. Some key themes centered on communication and the importance of connecting the employer and seeker. New, transitioning service members may also have educational skill gap issues that should be better identified during the transition process so the employment component can be more readily addressed. Across the board, the message was, once the exiting service member connects with the right employment opportunity, the candidate provides excellent value for the employer and a strong background in teamwork and a can do attitude.
A comprehensive report recapping the discussions from the National Veteran Employment Summit, including an outline featuring the next steps in veteran employment for government and industry, is scheduled to be released in early 2013.
