PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The National Business Coalition on Health (NBCH) released its 2012 eValue8 survey results announcing that in its newest category both Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Kaiser Permanente Northwest have been named the nation’s top overall performing health plans among the HMOs. In addition, Kaiser Permanente Southern California received an eValue8 Innovations Award for its Outpatient Safety Net program.
“These same systems allow medical center teams to track and follow up when at-risk populations need more customized care.”
Kaiser Permanente Southern California, which has been participating in NBCH’s eValue8 since its inception, has won three eValue8 Innovations Awards in the past six years, and has consistently received very high and benchmark scores.
Utilized by employers and business coalitions to develop and direct value-based purchasing strategies, eValue8 is a critical tool that annually assesses the health care accountability and quality improvement of health plans across the nation.
“The eValue8 results not only provide us with a performance score, but also insight into why we scored the way we did in order to align our quality improvement efforts with the health care needs of our employer customers,” said Joel D. Hyatt, MD, assistant medical director, Southern California Permanente Medical Group. “Kaiser Permanente in Southern California is committed to being a key health-care partner with its employer customers and business coalitions, consistently delivering increased value and high quality care to their employees, our members.”
This year, Kaiser Permanente Southern California’s health plan ranked in the top 15% in four additional categories including: behavioral health; consumer engagement; chronic disease management; and wellness & health promotion. The areas of highest performance were in the availability of web-based visits; the use and accessibility to electronic health records; and the ability to consult providers via e-mail; as well as in the tools and interventions activated to support chronic disease patients and providers to reduce gaps in care.
Approximately 70 health plans participated in NBCH’s 2012 eValue8. Kaiser Permanente Southern California, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and Kaiser Permanente Northern California were the top three overall performing HMO plans nationwide.
An eValue8 Innovations Award winner this year, Kaiser Permanente Southern California’s Outpatient Safety Net program also exemplifies the organization’s efforts to proactively identify and systematically address outpatient safety risks, apart from the inpatient setting, ensuring that each case is tracked until proper follow-up care is provided in order to prevent/reduce adverse health care outcomes.
Since it began in 2009, the Outpatient Safety Net program has launched 18 safety nets — an average of one new initiative every three months — and has executed more than 2 million successful interventions in the areas of follow-up care, medication monitoring, diagnosis detection, and potentially harmful interactions.
"Exceptional outcomes occur when clinicians, innovation, and technology come together synergistically to improve the quality of care for our members," said Michael Kanter, MD, Southern California Permanente Medical Group medical director for Quality and Clinical Analysis, and sponsor of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Outpatient Safety Net. "These same systems allow medical center teams to track and follow up when at-risk populations need more customized care."
The eValue8 Innovations Awards identify and recognize the innovative and creative work of providers developing and implementing programs that address critical health care issues. More than 30 "Best Practices and Innovations" submissions were received from health plans applying for the awards.
