BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The holidays are upon us, and many have already begun shopping. But what’s going to be hot this gift-giving season, and what should you leave on the shelf? Two recent Yankee Group reports, “Mobile Devices Reign Again in 2012 US Holiday Shopping” and “European Holiday Shopping Will Be a Smartphone Frenzy,” shed light on U.S. and European buying intent this holiday season.
“In fact, the top of the list of electronic goods consumers plan to purchase this holiday season is full of mobile devices, which is a reflection of the boom of mobile technologies and services.”
Highlights from both reports include:
- Mobile devices account for three of the top five devices U.S. consumers plan to buy this holiday season, and four of the top five in Europe. Consumers in both geographies plan to purchase smartphones, laptops and tablets this holiday season. Mobile-centric European consumers also include e-readers on their top five lists.
- Consumers are not the same everywhere. Holiday shoppers in different regions have different preferences. Consumers in Spain and Italy have higher intent to buy electronics than those in France and Germany, and Europeans overall will go for mobile devices more than Americans will this holiday season.
- Men have more interest in buying devices overall in the U.S. Sixty-nine percent of men say they intend to buy one of the devices listed within the next six months, whereas only 64 percent of women say the same.
“Economic recession and an uncertain future are looming over Europe, which will inevitably affect the holiday shopping behavior on the continent. But according to recent survey data, the downturn doesn’t appear to have hit mobile devices quite yet,” said Boris Metodiev, Yankee Group Senior Analyst and author of the European report. “In fact, the top of the list of electronic goods consumers plan to purchase this holiday season is full of mobile devices, which is a reflection of the boom of mobile technologies and services.”
