“The Federal Trade Commission’s ‘Red Flag Rules’ require cable and communications operators to create identity theft prevention programs to identify, detect, and respond to patterns, practices, or specific activities that could indicate identity theft,” said David Howe, president of SubscriberWise and credit manager for Massillon Cable TV and Clear Picture in northeast Ohio. “During a recent service request, a prospective subscriber who contacted the office decided to pose as her boyfriend’s mother. When asked for her social security number as part of the credit prequalification, she inadvertently provided a number that belonged to an unrelated woman who also happened to reside in another state.”
“That mistake triggered an instant alert,” stated Howe. “Specifically, after the CSR (customer service representative) processed the identity information, SubscriberWise returned a ‘Red Flag’ alert indicating that the input SSN did not match the file SSN at the national repository. Although this alert is usually caused by a simple keying error, it’s nevertheless something that we investigate as part of our ‘detect and defend’ mission. It’s a due diligence measure that can deliver profound benefits.”
