Schlage’s New SecureKey™ High-Security Door Locks Can Be Rekeyed in Seconds without Being Removed from Door

New design enables homeowners to rekey locks and deadbolts in two easy steps with no extra tools

CARMEL, Ind.--()--Imagine if you could change the locks protecting your home without actually replacing them or calling in a locksmith to rekey them. Sound far-fetched? Not at all. Homeowners can rekey Schlage’s new SecureKey™ locks and deadbolts in a matter of seconds without removing the lock from the door.

“I have tried a SecureKey deadbolt at home and remain impressed by not only the stark simplicity of the rekeying process but by the robustness of this new lock design. It’s a product that I can recommend without hesitation.”

Unlike traditional pin-and-tumbler locks, which must be removed from the door and disassembled for rekeying, SecureKey locks and deadbolts, which are available at retailers nationwide, employ a new high-security design that makes rekeying quick and simple without compromising security. Security is actually enhanced through the use of a pick-resistant Grade 1* cylinder and a special locking sidebar that protects against lock bumping. The SecureKey design is 10 times more secure from key duplication than other rekeyable systems on the market.

Rekeying: As Simple as One-Two

Rekeying Schlage SecureKey deadbolts and locks is a simple two-step procedure that does not require any extra tools. Simply insert the cut blue Reset Key included with every SecureKey lock, turn it to the 11:00 position and remove the key. Then insert a new cut blue Reset Key that matches the new keys for the lock, turn it back to the 12:00 position and you’re done. The lock is now rekeyed to the new key.

All SecureKey locks come with two cut brass keys and one matching cut Blue Reset Key as well as one blank Reset Key, which could be cut to match an existing key, for example. Reset Kits with two brass keys and one Reset Key (all with the same key cut) will be available for a suggested retail price of $5.99. Blank Reset Keys will also be available for a suggested retail of $1.99 each. Visit for a demonstration of the amazingly simple rekeying process.

“The great thing about SecureKey is that in addition to providing convenience and greater security for homeowners it saves time and money since no special skills or tools are required to rekey a lock,” said John Evans, Vice President, Marketing and Product Management, Residential Solutions for Ingersoll Rand, the parent company of Schlage. “Rekeying can be done by anyone in seconds. With other rekeyable locks you have to insert a separate tool into a small hole located on the cylinder and make sure it’s pushed all they way in, which adds a third step and opens the possibility of a rekeying error.

“With SecureKey, rekeying is facilitated by the Reset Key alone, resulting in a process that is streamlined, virtually fool-proof and highly secure due to the lock’s unique design,” Evans explained. “These locks also offer a convenient security solution for vacation homes and rental properties where lock changes are necessary from time to time.”

Keith Duncan, a Tucson, Arizona-based home security expert who makes regular appearances at home shows and on TV, had this to say about SecureKey: “I have tried a SecureKey deadbolt at home and remain impressed by not only the stark simplicity of the rekeying process but by the robustness of this new lock design. It’s a product that I can recommend without hesitation.”

Convenient, Extra Secure and Readily Available

A plus sign on the face of the lock cylinder makes it easy to identify SecureKey locks, which offer security benefits beyond resistance to picking and bumping. The only way to get a SecureKey lock into the rekeying mode is to insert the unique blue Reset Key into the cylinder, which provides another layer of security by insuring that only the owner of the Reset Key will be able to rekey the lock. If someone tries to use a foreign object to rekey the lock, it will become inoperable and remain in a secure, locked state.

SecureKey locks cost the same as Schlage’s conventional locks and are available in all styles of residential deadbolts and door locks, including handlesets, at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Menards and other chains and independent home improvement and hardware stores around the country. SecureKey locks are also available online at and
