SONOMA, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--SommSelect announced today that well-known sommelier and best-selling author David Lynch has joined the executive team as the Editorial Director, overseeing all daily wine offers and contributing both his wine expertise and distinctive journalistic voice to SommSelect.
“With his guidance we can offer our subscribers even deeper expertise in Italian wines and food pairings, not to mention his editorial expertise and ideas. There’s so much more we can do for our SommSelect subscribers, and as we add new offerings our audience will grow accordingly.”
SommSelect is a retail website that offers its subscribers a different, curated, sought-after wine for sale each day. Along with each day’s wine offer comes an in-depth exploration of each wine’s history, crafting, and taste profile— information that is commonly communicated ‘tableside’ by an expert sommelier at a restaurant. Lynch’s role will be to ensure that the quality of this information is second to none, and he will work with co-founder Ian Cauble MS (a Master Sommelier who is best known as one of the stars of the movie ‘SOMM’) to select and present the wines featured on the SommSelect site.
“Our goal in hiring David is to add other voices to complement my own,” said Cauble. “As we expand our business I think a greater diversity of sources will make the wine selections the best they can be. I’ve known David for a long time, have admired his work, and I think his knowledge, his humor, and his style are going to be welcomed by our subscribers.”
Best known for co-authoring the award-winning Italian wine tome Vino Italiano, Lynch has a unique resumé: his love of wine and food has taken him all over the world, originally as a journalist and later as a sommelier and restaurant professional. Lynch most recently owned a restaurant and wine bar in San Francisco called St. Vincent—the culmination of a long restaurant industry journey that began at Babbo, the New York City flagship of Mario Batali & Joe Bastianich’s hospitality empire. David was the longtime Wine Director, then general manager, at Babbo, taking home a James Beard Foundation Award in 2004 for Outstanding Wine Service. In 2009 he relocated to San Francisco to take over the wine programs at the Michelin-starred Quince and its casual sister, Cotogna, where he worked for several years before opening St. Vincent.
“We are glad to have a person of David’s caliber on our team. He is a James Beard award winner and is well known in the food and restaurant societies,” added Brandon Carneiro, co-founder and CEO of SommSelect. “With his guidance we can offer our subscribers even deeper expertise in Italian wines and food pairings, not to mention his editorial expertise and ideas. There’s so much more we can do for our SommSelect subscribers, and as we add new offerings our audience will grow accordingly.”
Lynch was a Senior Editor at Wine & Spirits magazine when he and Joe Bastianich began collaborating on Vino Italiano. He spent the year 2000 in Italy researching and writing this award-winning guide, and even after making the career-changing move to Babbo in 2001, he remained active as a writer. His contributions have been featured in GQ and Food & Wine, and for many years Lynch penned the “Wine Insider” column at Bon Appétit. He also collaborated with Vanity Fair’s David Kamp on the satirical Wine Snob’s Dictionary (2008).
