Electrifying the engines of tomorrow
Bosch’s electric axle drive system (eAxle) is making its global debut at NAIAS. The eAxle is a scalable, modular system that can provide 5-10 percent cost efficiency as compared to stand-alone components. This scalability is especially important as automotive OEMs require compact, cost-optimized solutions for both battery electric vehicle and hybrid applications that will make these technologies more accessible for mass audiences. The eAxle is flexible for multiple platforms and brings together top-of-the-line Bosch powertrain components into one system.
The Bosch eAxle drive system provides scalability via electro-magnetic layout options, inverter power scaling, and an optimized single speed transmission. In addition, Bosch’s motor simulation technology ensures a highly-optimized motor design.
The innovative Engine Compartment Actuator (ECA) is a Bosch brushless direct current (BLDC) electric motor platform designed specifically for actuation tasks in automotive applications and environments. Newly designed from the ground up, the ECA actuator performs very precise and high dynamic actuation tasks in the rough environments of engine compartments, chassis and powertrain applications. The ECA has a unique and modular design, which offers power scalability and modular electronic content. The power of the actuator can be scaled to customer requirements and combined with various electronic modules per the electrical vehicle architecture and customer requirements.
With computing capabilities ranging from an 8-bit microcontroller to a 32-bit dual core processing unit with capability to host and execute customer specific application software, the ECA is an important element in the electrification of current and future vehicle functions. The technology was recently recognized as a finalist in the 2017 Automotive News PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers’ Contributions to Excellence) Awards.
Extending the range of electric vehicles
Recognizing that range anxiety is a major barrier to the adoption of electric vehicles, Bosch is working to efficiently manage the heat flows in electric vehicles and extend range by up to 25 percent, especially in winter driving conditions.
The Thermal Management Station will display the technologies Bosch has developed to manage heating and cooling in electric vehicles. The holistic thermal management approach for electric vehicles makes heating in the winter and cooling in the summer cost effective and energy efficient. Bosch is working to efficiently manage the heat flow and avoid wasting energy, ultimately increasing the range of electric vehicles. The example thermal system will show a heat pump with Bosch fans, pumps and valves to recover waste heat from the powertrain and move warmed coolant to the cabin and battery for heating. By investigating different thermal management strategies through simulation and measurements, Bosch is able to predict future thermal management requirements for electrification.
Reducing time to charge
Bosch will showcase its Level 2 240V Electric Vehicle Charging Station. The American-made Power Xpress station lets you choose between 12-32 amps of power, and can charge compatible electric vehicles up to five times faster than a standard 110V outlet. The compact and durable design of the Power Xpress will withstand nearly any environment while taking up minimal space.
Next generation internal combustion engine systems
Direct injection (DI) makes up nearly 50 percent of today’s internal combustion engine market, and its share continues to grow as it enters its third generation of system technology. This new generation can provide significant improvements in efficiency, as well as reduced particulate and gaseous emissions, and improved acoustic performance to decrease overall noise.
Water injection enables internal combustion engines to achieve higher power and greater fuel efficiency. The basis of this innovative engine technology is a simple fact: an engine must not be allowed to overheat. To stop this from happening, additional fuel is injected into nearly every gasoline engine on today’s roads. This fuel evaporates, cooling critical components like the engine block and turbo charger. With water injection, Bosch engineers have exploited this physical principle. Before the fuel ignites, a fine mist of water is injected into the intake duct. Water’s high heat of vaporization means that it provides effective cooling.
Like many of the technologies introduced in recent years, the idea of water injection isn’t new. Water injection is emerging as a possibility today due to the convergence of fuel economy requirements, the increased accessibility of direct injection technology and the need for more enrichment due to the heating caused by downsizing with turbocharging. Bosch has the unique systems know-how and the right components to make yesterday’s dreams a reality today.
Making hybrid technology more accessible is the 48V Battery. 48V enables energy boost and recuperation, and is a potential measure for OEMs to reduce fuel consumption and emissions of internal combustion engines. Small in size and shape, this easy-to-integrate battery is housed in plastic and can operate at high temperatures. Drivers and passengers benefit from more comfortable stop-start-function. Additionally, 48V can be used to power other vehicle components including the HVAC, electric steering and electric braking.

Connected technologies that increase security and functionality
The Bosch Central Connected Gateway (CGW) is the central communication node that acts as a router for in-vehicle communication and through the connectivity control unit (CCU) to the outside. It is the gate for all data coming into the vehicle and is secure through security functions such as firewall and intrusion detection. ETAS and ESCRYPT (both parts of the Bosch Group) provide the necessary transmission and encryption technologies that ensure functional safety and data security. The gateway enables secure software updates via the cloud or firmware over the air (FOTA) updates, which means OEMS can provide consumers with the ability to keep their vehicle up-to-date on an on-going basis.
Perfectly Keyless is a user-centric vehicle access system that offers full passive entry and passive start functionality using a mobile phone as a digital car key, allowing the vehicle to be entered and started without any interaction on the phone from the digital key owner. When approaching the vehicle, Perfectly Keyless will automatically identify the secret key on the phone and perform a distance measurement. Access is allowed within a specified range of the vehicle. In a similar way, starting of the vehicle is only permitted if Perfectly Keyless localizes the mobile device inside the vehicle itself. By using a digital key on the user’s mobile device, Perfectly Keyless improves personalized car settings and enables simplified car sharing.
The Connectivity Control Unit with Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) technology is based on a Wi-Fi radio standard called DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) and allows vehicles to transmit basic information such as current location, speed, heading, acceleration and vehicle condition to other vehicles in the vicinity. This control unit will allow vehicles to communicate with infrastructure using the same radio technology. V2V is being mandated by the U.S. government and the V2X CCU will bring this technology to OEMs.
The neo-Sense haptic touch display creates the sensation of physically touching a button on a standard touchscreen display. Bosch technology can create the feeling of different texture as the user’s fingers move around the display surface enabling a new dimension of touch interfaces.
Automated technologies show users the automotive future
Bosch is empowering automated driving through technologies that enable a more comfortable, convenient and accident-free future. Among these technologies is the global debut of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system with fail-operational function. This highly redundant feature enables either a driver or auto pilot system to independently return to a minimal risk condition maintaining about 50 percent electric steering support in the rare case of a single failure. This technology is a key requirement on the path to fully automated driving and will enable OEMs to comply with the fall back strategies as proposed in the Federal Automated Vehicles Policy documents from the U.S. Department of Transportation and National Traffic Highway Safety Association.
The Fail-Operational Electric Power Steering functionality is part of the EPSapa servo-assisted steering system displayed at NAIAS. The EPS with fail-operational functionality represents the EPS solution for highly automated driving. In opposition to the standard EPS displayed at NAIAS, the fail-operational solution includes a fully-redundant electronic architecture. Belt driven rack-and-pinion power steering by Bosch has proven to be a dependable steering solution and the Bosch offering specifically increases reliability and reduces weight.
From the driver experience perspective, the Automated Driving Virtual Reality Station will serve as a look into the future of automated driving. The virtual reality experience will focus on the human-machine interface (HMI) where the driver will be involved in route planning, engaging and disengaging automated driving and experiencing the drive state indicator.
