BENSALEM, Pa.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--2nd Avenue Value Stores, the thrift chain dedicated to bringing customers the best value in clothing, household goods and collectables, is giving the gift of peace of mind to two local families this holiday season with its 2nd Chance Holiday Program. The initiative works alongside the American Red Cross and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Philadelphia (SVdP) to aid area families in crisis.
“As a longstanding member of the Philadelphia community, we look for opportunities to lend a hand when our neighbors have fallen on hard times”
American Red Cross disaster volunteer and school teacher Carol Crawford has no explanation for the sensation that woke her up the night a blazing fire engulfed a room of her North Edgewood home in November. “It was the middle of the night. I felt someone shaking me as I slept. When I turned to look, no one was there. When I got up and opened my son’s bedroom door, a fire was completely surrounding him in his bed,” she says.
For Carol, a teacher and trained American Red Cross disaster-response volunteer, instinct set in and she moved fast to get herself and her son, Reggie, 32, safely outside. But the aftermath was devastating—not only was the house unlivable, but most of Carol’s irreplaceable teaching supplies were ruined. The family has since transitioned into the Red Cross House, where they are living while their home is restored. While lucky to be alive, the question of how to replenish the personal items lost in the fire remained.
Also struggling this holiday season is the Battle family of Northwest Philadelphia. Dedicated members of SVdP’s St. Martin de Porres Parish, Catherine and her husband, have struggled finding work, and worried about providing basic needs as well as making Christmas special for their seven children, ranging in age from two to 17. Their oldest son has substantial medical needs, further contributing to the family’s financial struggle. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s local conference has provided immediate assistance with basic needs for the family.
Thanks to the 2nd Chance Holiday Program and the American Red Cross, the Crawfords will receive a $100 gift card to 2nd Avenue Value Stores, per person, and a fully prepared Christmas dinner. The Battles, as well, will enjoy a $100 gift card per family member and Christmas dinner, through the program and SVdP.
“As a longstanding member of the Philadelphia community, we look for opportunities to lend a hand when our neighbors have fallen on hard times,” says Tony Peressini, CEO of 2nd Avenue Value Stores. “During the holidays, this is especially important to us. Whether it’s offering special shopping discounts as people shop for presents, or helping local families such as the Battles and Crawfords, we strive to make our community the best place it can be, and the 2nd Chance Holiday Program is just one more way we are doing that.”
2nd Avenue purchases donated goods from four charities, including the American Red Cross and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul of Philadelphia, that partner with GreenDrop, a fundraiser for national nonprofits. Through this cycle of donations, GreenDrop helps these organizations aid families such as the Crawfords and Battles when disaster strikes. The 2nd Chance Holiday Program is a continuation of 2nd Avenue’s commitment to the community.
