Cambridge University Press Publishes a New Biography of Notorious Thinker, Friedrich Nietzsche

NEW YORK--()--Cambridge University Press has just published The Making of Friedrich Nietzsche, a biography of the thinker’s first 24 years, by author Daniel Blue.

Nietzsche, one of the most controversial philosophers of the past two centuries, continues to have a lasting impact not only in academic and philosophic circles but in popular culture as well. He was given to colorful statements, many of which still appeal to rebellious adolescents. His remark, “What does not kill me makes me stronger,” (in slightly altered form) made it into a Batman film. Yet Nietzsche has also enormously influenced some of the finest minds in philosophy and intellectual studies.

Based almost exclusively on German scholarship, little of which has been studied in the English-speaking world, Blue’s book centers on Nietzsche’s early youth and the ways he responded to local social and educational teachings. The Making of Friedrich Nietzsche sets new standards for Nietzsche biography and will mark a fresh start in that field.

The book is available through Amazon, Cambridge University Press, Barnes & Noble, Powell’s Books and IndieBound.

Praise for Blue’s book:

"Blue has done a tremendous service to Anglo-American Nietzsche scholarship, and anyone with a serious interest in Nietzsche should consult [his book]." Matthew Meyer, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

"Blue’s writing is immensely readable and animates even the driest moments of the young man’s life." Matthew Snider, PopMatters

"It would be difficult to imagine a better account of Nietzsche's early life. Blue's research - exemplary in scope and meticulous in rigor - is matched only by the fluidity of his prose. This will quickly become a standard resource for Nietzsche scholars."

Anthony K. Jensen, Providence College

"Scrupulously researched, thoughtfully crafted, clearly written, and eminently readable, this new book will appeal not only to scholars and students of German philosophy, but also to lovers of biography more generally. Blue's book makes an outstanding contribution to the secondary literature devoted to Nietzsche."

Daniel Conway, Texas A&M University
