Dr. Bindman will lead the company’s assessment and adaptive learning division, designing and implementing systems that maximize Ready4’s ability to predict student performance and automatically adapt instruction to match the skills of the student. Additionally, Dr. Charlie Chubb (a collaborator and former Ph.D. advisor to Dr. Bindman) has also joined the advisory board for Ready4. Dr. Chubb is a professor of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and is a renowned expert in both learning theory and predictive models of complex cognitive systems.

Dr. Bindman earned his Ph.D. from the Institute for Math Behavioral Sciences at UCI, where he specialized in math modeling of cognition with a focus on the visual system. While there, he also began his long association with ALEKS, an artificially intelligent, adaptive assessment and learning system first developed at UCI by Jean-Claude Falmagne. After graduating in 2002, Dan joined ALEKS full time and was one of the principal architects of all aspects of the ALEKS system, driving continuous product improvement and key innovations and eventually becoming editorial director from 2007 to 2014, including head of user experience from 2010 to 2012.
Dr. Bindman also has ten years of experience as a classroom teacher in both math and social sciences. “I started my career as a classroom instructor, and I saw firsthand how students learn, and how being able to adjust instruction to students’ skill levels is so valuable to their learning process,” said Dr. Bindman. “It was only natural that after getting my Ph.D., I focused my career on adaptive learning and assessment. In 2015, Charlie and I began working on a new model from scratch that we hoped would be a breakthrough in efficiency and accuracy in assessment of student knowledge, and after applying it to the ample Ready4 data with literally millions of data points, it appears we got that breakthrough. I don’t think there is a system out there that can predict student performance more efficiently or accurately than ours. This accuracy in knowledge prediction is the linchpin for a successful adaptive learning system and I’m excited to work with Ready4 to bring this model to its fruition.”
Dr. Bindman’s new model has already led to substantial improvements in the Ready4 scoring system. After working on only 10 to 20 questions, Ready4 can predict with good accuracy a given student’s performance on each one of the over 1,000 questions comprising the product. And this accuracy only increases as the student answers more questions. Over the next year, Dr. Bindman and his team will continue to focus on increasing the efficiency and accuracy of this system, but the primary focus will be in using this new system to give students the ultimate adaptive learning experience. By adjusting the lessons (and questions) to the exact right level for each student’s particular knowledge and skill set, students will be able to increase their scores more rapidly with fewer hours of work, as time will not be wasted on lessons that are too hard or too easy.
