Claire Cochran and Daniel Feder of The Law Offices of Daniel Feder Filed Sexual Harassment Lawsuit Against Esalen Retreat in Big Sur, California

MONTEREY, Calif. & SAN FRANCISCO--()--Claire Cochran, Esq., and Daniel Feder, Esq. of The Law Offices of Daniel Feder filed a lawsuit on behalf of a former employee of The Esalen Institute alleging that she was subjected to a sexually hostile working environment at work.

Janelle Boatright, the former employee of Esalen, the iconic spiritual retreat in Big Sur recently featured in AMC’s hit show Mad Men, filed the lawsuit in Monterey County Superior Court alleging that her supervisor engaged in a pattern of sexual harassment towards her. She alleges that Esalen created a hostile work environment that promoted inappropriate touching, comments, attitudes and norms that violated laws prohibiting gender harassment and sexual harassment. Ms. Boatright contends that she reported harassment to her supervisors at Esalen, and that Esalen failed to take sufficient corrective actions to thwart the harassment from continuing.

Ms. Boatright’s complaint alleges that the harassing conduct was directed not only at her, but also towards others that have been impacted by ineffective, abusive management and unsafe work conditions for many years at Esalen. Her complaint alleges that many of her co-workers were too afraid to come forward and speak publicly about what happened to them. Her lawsuit is based on California laws that require employers to take prompt remedial action in response to complaints alleging sexual harassment. The goal of the suit is to bring to light the myriad of ways the organization can be held accountable for creating a safe and healthy work place.

Esalen is represented by Michael D. Bruno, Esq. of Gordon & Rees, LLP. Ms. Boatright filed her Civil Complaint in Monterey County Superior Court, Case No.15CV000144.
